Kaliko -> Technology really IS kinda cool... (11/26/2014 3:48:26 PM)

Never mind that technology has changed the course of my life (I never would have met him if not for the wonder of computers - and airplanes, for that matter), but I think this kind of thing is amazing: We're having power outages throughout New England tonight. I'm able to look at a map online and see exactly where each outage is, how many homes are affected in each area (as little as 1 home reported), and the estimated restoration time for each outage situation. It updates every five minutes.

I think that's fucking incredible.

Do you know what else is incredible? This.

Not only the fact that we can fly through the air, but that we can track it, that we can fly through the air with so many other airplanes at the same time, that we do this every day and no one (except maybe air traffic controllers) gives it a thought.

And how about this? The Cicret - a bracelet that displays a smartphone screen on your arm. And somehow, it picks up your touch commands. (I admit - this one freaks me out a little bit.)

Regardless, tonight I am thankful for the amazing advances I've witnessed in my lifetime. I can't even imagine what the next decade will bring.

Seriously! Isn't the world just the best sometimes? I mean we know what the surface of a comet looks like and discovered organics on it. I cant imagine what's to come...

The next big thing for shopping is IFAN which will bypass credit cards by signaling through chips...directly to bank accounts or credit accounts.

Then there is Graphene which is graphite electronic technology that will replace just about everything we use now, mostly silicone.

Still some hurdles in both but even 5 years is a long time now. Look how far 3D printers have come in that time.

It truly is an amazing time of discovery as a result of new technology. We are discovering things that we never thought possible. And we are discovering that technology has its drawbacks as well.

When I was a kid I lived near a college and was befriended by a professor there. He lent me a PC, certainly not a PC by our standards, but a PC nonetheless. Anyway, he handed me a coding book and showed me a little about how to use the machine. I remember sitting there in my living room and programming that thing for hours and hours just so I could play Tic-Tac-Toe. Yesterday, I was playing a video game. In the game you can climb a snow covered mountain, and sit there and watch the Northern Lights. I stared at my screen in complete awe, dumbfounded at how far computers and computer games have come.

I wish I could see what technology is going to be like in 100 years.

I used to do that, as well. Some very rudimentary coding to make patterns and images on my screen. Not quite good enough to do Tic Tac Toe, though.

3D printers make me a little nervous....But still, I'm in awe of the capability.

Kaliko, I want that bracelet. I mean I really, really want that bracelet!

What an exciting world we live in.

While technology is amazing, it has its drawbacks.

When I was a kid, we had 3 tv stations, one of them french. I spent a lot of time playing by myself (imaginative play), reading, practicing piano, playing outside alone or with friends, biking, piano lessons, skating lessons, brownies/guides working in the garden with mom, planting, weeding, harvesting.

Neither of my kids haved played with friends outside of school, except for "playdates". My 11 year old cannot ride a bike. Both of my kids are immersed in technology of some sort. And before you point it out.....yes, I know, it is my fault for allowing computers and tablets and gaming systems and iPods into the house. I regret some of the choices I have made.

But. My 16 year old is a whiz with anything electronic. Instruction manuals? Phooey! Within 10 minutes he knows how everything, not just the basics, works. As for the 11 yr old, she loves to write stories, dance to her favorite music vidoes, and read. Electronic or paper, she is an avid reader.

So, good or bad? Depends on what çhores they are ignoriñg,
