Seriously, it solves nothing, is just an excuse to steal stuff and burn stuff down, and makes it harder for the peaceful protesters to have their voices heard. FUCK RIOTERS.

So, anyone who thinks the rioting and burning of local business is somehow justified please tell me why, because in my eyes all its doing is giving the law enforcement more excuses to militarize the police even more. And i am very against the corrupt police system (yes, there are good police, but the system is corrupt, and those good police usually die in the line of duty, willing to sacrifice what the corrupt ones will not).

Of course if they burned down KKK places I wouldnt shed a tear, but they arent doing that.

I would because it would let the KKK act like victims and give them an excuse to "fight back"

Maybe because the answer is acutely obvious???

If a bunch of assholes and idiots want to start a riot, they just do.
Quite often there is no rhyme nor reason for it other than blind violence.

You can't fix stupid, unfortunately.

It doesn't solve anything. It doesn't get a point across. It doesn't make others sympathetic to a cause. Rioting and looting makes no statement other than people have found an excuse to behave poorly. Nothing says "hear my voice" better than a new, stolen flat screen TV.

You want to demonstrate peacefully, fine, go do it... I am all for that. You get enough people together peacefully, you can make a powerful statement, there are ultimately more of "us" than there are of "them" and not much can be done if enough people stand as one.

Sadly, not enough people care to change things. Look at the voting statistics to see if I am wrong.

Civil unrest serves notice on the rest of the nation to pay attention to the underclass. The underclass has been devastated by the war on drugs, foreclosures, the great recession, under-performing schools, and the outsourcing of jobs overseas. Combine this with a local police department full of out-of-district white cops who prey on the local populace via fines, citations, bench warrants, and drug arrests and you have a recipe for problems.

I'm not mad at the people in Ferguson, I'm concerned for our nation. The underlying causes of this disturbance remain fully in place.

School reforms mandating testing and "teacher accountability" have failed to improve anything since 2000. Wages remain stagnant. Employer's don't pay living wages or offer decent benefits packages. On top of all that, the police are hassling you.

"It's not a war on drugs, don't ever think it's a war on drugs. It's a war on the blacks, it started as a war on the blacks," says Ed Burns, the co-creator of the television show The Wire. "It's now spread [to] the Hispanics and poor whites, but initially it was a war on blacks. And it was designed, basically, to take that energy that was coming out of the civil rights movement and destroy it." Ed Burns of THE WIRE

Yes. It sounds trite to point out the obvious but rich people don't riot. One could observe that the probability of any given person engaging in a riot is directly related to the amount they have to lose. Only those with little or nothing to lose engage in riots.

Ferguson is an example of people with little or nothing to lose, who feel powerless and alienated by a system they regard as oppressive engaging in self destructive behaviour after the umpteenth case of what they feel is bad behaviour by the authorities - in this instance, the police. People marginalised and excluded by the system provoked into turning on the system.

If there is a desire to stop such rioting, then the steps that need to be taken are obvious too. I don't see any genuine desire expressed in many of the posts on this issue.

How do you explain riots after a sports team loses their championship game (or even when they win, sometimes)? Is there some sort of attention needing to be paid to those fans or their team?

Riots can do what you state. But, that's not the only reason we have them. And, how often are the riots focused on the ones doing the affronting deed? In Ferguson, they oppose how they perceive cops treat blacks (accurate in their perceptions or not), so they riot and destroy businesses? There's a difference between destroying police property and private property that has no ties to the cops (other than relying on the police for public defense, as any other business). That's what blows my mind more than anything else.

How does standing up to police oppression by destroying store fronts and looting stores make any sense at all? That's going to impact those stores more than the police.

Plus, how is standing up to police oppression by breaking the law make any sense? You're shining a spotlight on abuse by inviting legitimate police action?!?

However rioting doesnt happen in a vacuum.

What amuses me(and I say that with a huge tongue in my cheek) is that people here are more sickened by financial destruction than the reason for the protest.
Things can be replaced, human lives cannot.

You are right, human lives cannot be replaced. Im also wondering why some are against the police, yet dont want people carrying guns so they can defend themselves because the police are so corrupt?

I'm not sure anyone on these boards were on the grand jury or at the scene the night of the shooting. Thus, no one here actually knows that Brown didn't attack the officer, or that the officer wasn't warranted in using deadly force. There very well may be an issue between leo's and the blacks in and around the Ferguson area, but torching buildings, rioting and looting isn't really the way to show it off.

The TEA Party held rallies, which were pretty much peaceful. They had people who were pissed off at government. Why didn't they riot?

The OWS held protests, which were pretty much peaceful. They had people who were pissed off at Wall Street (and some at Government). Why didn't they riot?

There are ways to protest. The US Constitution even includes the right to peaceably assemble and petition government. People do not have the right to riot and destroy public or private property. Not only is that a crime, when you're pissed off at law enforcement, destroying private property isn't even aiming your actions at who you're pissed off at! It's like one of my twins hitting the other twin when he's pissed off at his older brother. Makes no damn sense.

The people of anglian countries riot differently and for different reasons than almost everyone else.

This is direct action with an aim you may or may not agree with: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3n1-l_CAPzg

This is mob rioting of a people who lack social cohesion and a movement with a real direction, venting their anger: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P43WZd611WA

Talks, especially among participants, should precede any riots instead of follow them.
