Muhammad Ali is reportedly in the hospital today battling pneumonia as well as the Parkinson's disease that he has long suffered with.
I could have put this in off topic, which is where I think it rightfully belongs, but given Ali's controversial history I assumed this would devolve into a discussion of the politics of his refusal to accept military induction as well as his history with the Black Muslim's of the late sixties and the seventies
My intention is to wish this remarkable man a speedy and full recovery,he is an American Icon who was a significant figure during my formative years
Get well soon Champ !!!!!!

Whether you agree with his stances over the years or not you have to admire his openness and sincerity. To bad more people are not like that. He gave me much entertainment over the years and sacrificed his body and future... He deserved better I too wish him a speedy recovery.

Good call slvmike4u.

I haven't seen the news and am thankful you posted. I'm stunned. I will always see him as I did when he was younger, healthier and smiling at me.

He always knew how to take on a challenger. May he be strengthened within this and come out a champ again.

He pretty much defined the cultural divide during his first meeting with Joe Frasier....if you were establishment, you rooted for Joe.
If you were unhappy with the status quo,if you were anti-establishment,anti-war you rooted for Ali
A simplification perhaps, but true all the same.
I know he was the lightning rod of many arguments between my father and I

The worst thing that happened was his realization of how well he could take a punch.....and the decay of his wonderful legs during his 3.5 years in boxing exile.
That combination led to the rope a dope that he used to such singular success....only to have all those punches lead to the Parkinsons disease that has made him such a tragic figure in his later years.

a sidenote: I was a huge boxing fan in my youth....seeing what became of Muhammad and so many others I can no longer watch that "sport"

That is unfortunate. Although to be honest about all I know about him is, "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee." That being said, since I do not "do sports" I could not really tell you what that means and if it translates into any other areas of life.

Loosely translated it means to move quickly, not allowing the other guy to hit you, while you pepper him with both hands very rapidly.
The shame was that after his forced exile he never regained that wonderful ability(for a heavyweight) to float across the ring, dancing and jabbing....so he decided he could just sit on the ropes while the other guy punched himself out.
That discovery has led to his Parkinsons disease....the man could take punches for 2 and a half minutes of every round than pop off the ropes and pepper his nemesis with lightning quick punches ...often"stealing" rounds in which he did little other than catch punches

No,an athlete can not sit for three and a half years without competing and be expected to pick up where he left off.
The time itself takes a toll(they were the prime years of a boxer)add to that the inaction....and the legs just don't work the way they used to
