I happened to run into this warning on a profile: WARNING: Any institutions or individuals using this site or any of its associated sites for studies or projects - You do NOT have my permission to use any of my profile or pictures in any form or forum both current and future. If you have or do, it will be considered a serious violation of my privacy and will be subject to legal ramifications. It is recommended that other members post a similar notice to this! Anybody know what this guy is talking about?

It is a bullshit "warning" that people think will protect their right to privacy. It doesn't. I think I heard, somewhere, that it was a joke, started by a couple of college kids? Either way, anything you put on the interwebz is there for anyone to see forever and always (if they know how to find shit). There's no privacy, when you abdicate that right, of your own volition. Don't worry about it. People THINK that will stop people from using them in studies or quoting them, or what have you. It won't. And there is likely no need.

~FRing it~ It's ridiculous and rather laughable if someone thinks posting that is going to protect them from anything. It's not like whatever institution studying profiles for some shadowy reason is going to suddenly say "Holy shit, Dr. So and So...this profile has "The Warning"!!! Quick, exit out of that profile ASAP and pray we don't get sued back to the Stone Age for even THINKING of using this person for our purposes"

Actually, When I switch schools, next year, I may be doing a double major thingy. It's almost a "gimme" to include (a) language, religion (I'll be transferring to a Catholic School), or philosophy in my studies. I think I'm going to add my own version of the "warning" to my own profile. I'll have to come up with a well-worded one. Michael

Think of it this way, any idiot who puts that in their profile is broadcasting to the world that they're an idiot. When someone saves you the effort of wasting time on them to determine if they are worth interacting with, you should accept that as the boon it is and quickly move along.

stef is right. 1. I can find within a minute, pictures of incredibly hot people, professionally taken, online. With them available, nobody in their right mind would steal my pics instead. 2. If I post my pics on the Internet, I've relinquished some right to them. 3. If I go to a lawyer, telling him that someone stole my pics from a site that to the common American looks like a porn site, he or she will laugh in my face. 4. If I sue, I need to quantify my damages due to someone stealing my pics. 5. Lawyers cost a few hundred dollars an hour. Why would I spend that kind of money to sue someone when damages are basically nothing. 6. Some of the folks who steal pics do it to defraud. The penalty for defrauding is serious. If they're willing to defraud and risk those charges, they'll be unfazed by pic stealing charges (if any exist). 7. Some of the stealers are out of the country and not reachable by US law.

It's nonsense. Nobody is studying anyone. That's a viral message people include in their profiles out of ignorance. It does nothing to protect anyone, all it does is encourage more people to post the same useless message.
