smileforme50 -> Rock & Roll Hall of Fame....??? (12/22/2014 8:45:35 PM)

Things that really make you wonder sometimes.....

Joe Cocker's passing got me thinking about the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. So I was looking at the website where they have all the Hall of Fame inductees listed.

So....Joe Cocker is not currently in the Hall of Fame....but "The Clash" is (????)

Johnny Cash and Ray Charles are in the Hall of Fame....well at least they got that one right.

Nirvana is in the Hall of Fame....but Willie Nelson is not....I guess Willie was too much "country" and not enough "rock & roll"?

Kris Kristofferson is not in the Hall of Fame....but KISS is.....

Janis Joplin is in the Hall of Fame....makes sense....but it's funny that one of her most famous songs, and one of Johnny Cash's most famous songs....and God knows how many others....were written by Kristofferson.

What exactly are the criteria for getting into the Hall of Fame anyway???? Sheesh....

Apparently, the "process" is to be nominated by some all-knowing gurus at Rolling Stone magazine and then to be voted on by a mysterious group of "500 industry experts".

I did a quick Google search of "top 10 best artists not in the rock and roll hall of fame". I found the results to be quite interesting, especially the ones that were written several years back.

KISS, for example, was on a list written 2 or 3 years ago. Apparently, they've had 24 gold records...more than any other American rock band. Who knew? [;)]

Rush is another example of a group that was overlooked for way too many years. They finally got in in 2013, but will always have to live with the indignity of having been beaten into the HOF by Neil Diamond. (Don't get me wrong, I *love* me some Neil....but dang...he beat out a group that *many* rock bands look at as one of their biggest influences....)

From my brief reading, there seems to be some loud opposition to the "process". Much like the Oscars, I suppose. Marisa Tomei? Really?

I went to the Rock and Roll HoF and it sucked. It is not at all what I thought it would be.
Also, it should NOT be in Cleveland and the admission process is elitist and complete BS.

A lot of people say that it shouldn't be in Cleveland....and I agree, but it is there because of historic significance.

Where do you think it should be?

I wasn't all that impressed with the hall, either. Expensive as all get-out and not very well done, in my estimation.

There were no pictures or videos to speak of in the actual hall, itself; just autographs (or little name plates).

I did read the plaque outside, though and the spot was chosen because that was where Alan Freed coined the term "rock and roll". It was the site of the radio station (I believe it was WJW) where he was working (paying for airtime), when he coined the term. So, I don't have an issue with that.

Here's one of my big issues: When the hall had been established but hadn't yet been built, they held "induction ceremonies" at Madison Square Garden. That's cool. MSG has been the site of some of the greatest (and worst) concerts in the history of the genre. Since they had already established this big hoopla in a huge arena, why didn't they factor that in, when they were building the hall so they could, eventually, hold the festivities at the hall? It makes little sense to me.

I think everyone that's a fan of Rock 'N' Roll that hasn't been there should try and fit it in but I wouldn't recommend a special trip (I drove from New Brunswick, NJ) just to go there.

I may pop in there, again, at some point this summer since I'm going to Akron, anyway. It will depend upon my mood.

I think it should be in L.A. only because that is the hub of the music industry.

You might get some argument out of Noo Yawkuhs on that.

For that matter; people from Philthadelphia and Detroit and Seattle and ...

Or Memphis....

I have to admit that I've only been there twice (for very short visits) but when I think "Memphis", I'm still thinking: "Shit-kickin' music".

A very happy season to you, JAS
