WTF?!?

I can only hope and pray this flight is found safe. This is another gut punch for that area and it's residents.

In this case, one of the article mentioned heavy storm clouds, so this seems weather-related, while the Malaysian flight was pretty bizarre with them going off their flight path in a completely different direction.

I don't think this would put me off Asian carriers - depending on which one, at least not any more than it would put me off any US carriers whenever a US airliner crashes. Some of our domestic carriers have aging fleets, and I have to admit that I've become a bit more nervous about flying than I used to be.

I remember seeing some movie about the Bermuda Triangle when I was a kid, but I didn't think there was much to it.

True enough, but the plane was given the A-OK to deviate from the flight plan to skirt the weather.

Just from reading as current news as I could find, they aren't even detecting any pings from the black box. That's a bit strange, too.

I've flown Air Asia, Bangkok Airways, Lao Air, Tiger, Scoot, JAL, Thai and many other local and international carriers based in SE Asia. I've never experienced the slightest reason to feel unsafe on these airlines. In fact, I found them friendlier than flying American or Delta. It seemed to me that the planes I flew upon in SE Asia were newer and better maintained that the planes I encountered in the USA.

Like everyone else I have no idea what has happened to this flight or to the Malaysian plane that disappeared in the region some time ago. I can say that I will be surprised if it turns out that the fault lies in the airlines or protocols used by carriers in the region. I do hope that this latest flight turns up with all aboard safe and sound but sadly, this seems an increasingly forlorn hope.

I think what may be in common with these two incidents is that both flights apparently just "disappeared" and could no longer be tracked. In most air disasters, they at least know where and when it happened. The Malaysian airliner seemed to be hijacking where someone turned off the transponder so they couldn't be tracked. I wonder if that was the case here. I think there has been some discussion about possible ways of improving the technology of tracking aircraft in flight.

DaddySatyr -> RE: WTF is going on?!? (12/29/2014 8:06:44 AM)

I'm starting to wonder if someone or some group hasn't found a way to turn off the boxes and are building an arsenal of "bombs". It's not like planes have never been used, before. If something similar happens once more, I'll be almost thoroughly convinced.

I read the okay to deviate came too late, when it was initially requested there was another plane in the flight path so they couldn't rise above the storm until the second plane was clear.

Read in the Times today that the European Union bars a number of that regions carriers from their airspace citing poor safety records and lax maintenance issues.
This particular carrier was not on the list, but it's parent company does have carriers on that same list.
Supposedly citizens of the EU are to be warned when booking flights of the issues.

The request to deviate was twofold. The pilot requested to veer left and to rise 6k feet. The leftward deviation was approved, while the elevation deviation was not, for the reason you stated.

FR,

The plane crashed into the Sea. At least they found this one.
