Oh hell. My little dumb phone died last night, died dead RIP. I loved that bastard with is wee slide out keyboard.

This means time to upgrade to an intimidating and scary SMARTER THAN I AM phone. Verizon says I can get a 5C iPhone for free. Sigh. Okay whatever, bring it on says the luddite.

Data plans? WTF. How am I supposed to know?

This stuff is over my head.

Verizon says the average user is at a 2GB data plan. What does that even mean?? What exactly is a data plan? It says the data plan recommended is $50 a month. Does that mean I only pay $50 a month? I hope so cuz that is way cheaper than what I'm paying right now.

Please help. I look at numbers and my brain glazes over, for real it does.

I donwanna phone smarter than meeeeee.

And this whole bluetooth thingie, what? *blinks* Austin just passed a law that no one can talk on the phone while driving unless on a bluetooth. Is that extra?

I can't advise you on data plans but I strongly suggest going with a Galaxy or some such thing from Samsung. I have one and I love that bastard like I've never loved a phone before. It is far easier to use and runs circles around my old iPhone.

I want something that um... goes with my annoying iMac thing. Does any smart phone do that?

Argh I don't even have the vocabulary to ask what I need to ask!

*hugs her dead dumb phone to her heaving bosom as she weeps tears of techie despair*

TBH I'm not sure. When it comes to stuff like that I'm tech-deficient. Hope you can, it really IS the superior phone.

If you wanna match your imac/ipad/iwhatever, get an iphone.
I agree with Live, I prefer samsung and android OS, my daughter could explain it in five minutes, but shes on her way to living in the UK for the next year, So Im sorry I cant help with anything i/related.
Neither am I much good with US plans, I know my bill can shoot up real fast, because I rarely use my phone, except when I leave the house. I rely on my wifi at home for everything. I know unless I get a subscription for roaming calls in the US< the cost goes way thru the rooof...BUT it only happened once. I use a very basic plan most of the time. YOu can do some research on forums/websites. Just be careful what you are getting into.
Im sure someone will be along soon with some Iphone advice, good luck.

The data plan is very dependent on what you actually plan on doing with the phone. Smart phones run data in the background naturally. It is typically a very small amount. If you have wifi at your house and public access to wifi that will cut down on your data usage as well.

My husband only really uses his apps at home when he is on our wifi network. Therefore, he uses very little data. Less than 1 GB per month. He will occasionally use the maps app (GPS application) and search the internet if he needs something on the fly.

I use a lot more data. I have a different plan that he does. I like to stream music when I am work. It is a lot easier to set-up my phone and wander around the lab, plus I get a much larger selection of music that way. So, my suggestion is look into the smart phone they are giving away for free, learn about some of the apps you can download and use, and then decide how often you plan on using it in a public space without wifi. If you are going to play on your phone while at work or while waiting somewhere you might want something around 3GB.

Typically, the 50 dollars a month is the plan, some places charge a $10 monthly fee for having a smart phone. Don't forget you have all the taxes and fees that the phone companies charge. Additionally, if you go over that 2GB of data then they charge you X amount of dollars per GB extra that you use.

Edited to add: If you want something to go with your imac you are going to want an iphone. I would pay attention to the amount of storage. If it is 8GB you can probably fill that up very quickly, so keep that in mind. I've never owned and iphone, so I don't know if you can just pop in an SD card like you can with the androids. The good thing is, that it will sync nicely with your itunes, calendar, and all that fun stuff.

I have no idea whether this applies to laptops but I do know I'm able to use iTunes on my Windows laptop. Those more in the know, does this mean it's possible to use a Galaxy with a Mac or are only iPhones compatible with Macs?

I do have wifi at home, streaming music is unlikely and most apps are unlikely for me.

Mainly it would be -100 texts a month, unknown number of talking time, uploading photos and getting directions when I'm lost which is admittedly about once a week lol.

Most of the time I'm at home so wouldn't use it for internet.

I dread dread a touch screen, I really hate those. I've long nails and my depth perception is a bit wonky. I like actual keys to touch!

The texts aren't part of the data usage. So I wouldn't worry about that. I'm guessing 2GB will probably be more than enough for you.

I will say it is often easier to just use my phone if I have to look something up quick. But like i said, being on wifi you don't use your data.

I'm not much of an app person either, but there are some pretty useful apps out there that have come in handy. I'm reader and I love my kindle app. There is an app called CamScanner. If you need to scan a document you just snap a picture and it turns it into a pdf. Fitness apps, where you can sync your phone to any fitness bands. Just a bunch of stuff like that. If you are like me you won't know what apps you want, until you need one.

I don't know if the iphones have this, but with my android I can just push a button and say what I want to say and it will turn it into a text. That might work for you instead of using the touch screen.

Good Luck!

An iPhone would be best for you. It will sync with your iPad and your Mac, making data moot. So it doesn't matter how much data storage your phone has, because you can swap the stuff you want to keep between your Mac and iPad.

The added bonus of an iPhone being synced with your iPad, when using iMessage you can text through your iPad instead of your iPhone.

Bluetooth... arggghhhh... allows your iPad and iPhone to talk to each other. I didn't check to see if your Mac was bluetooth capable, it could be, but not likely considering how old it is. Bluetooth is a "remote" communication system... walkie talkies for every device that has bluetooth. I do not use bluetooth "cyborg" devices, they are uncomfortable for me and they often give me a weird feedback. I use the iPhone earbuds, they work very well for me canceling out more outside noise.

Now, should you get pulled over for using earbuds, make sure the officer cites the law "specifically" regarding the use of earbuds and how that law applies to the hearing impaired (most cops write tickets cuz you are paying court costs regardless), he will bid you good day and go on about his business ;)

Knowing you, as well as I do, the apps you will want are music apps (pandora specifically), and the only thing I could see you making a dent in your data storage with is pictures, which will transfer to your Mac as soon as you hook the iPhone to it.

Now... You have some options. I bought my iPhone from a pawn shop (yep, I profit from the misery of others), bought a strait talk sim and have unlimited talk, text and data (ha ha ha... unlimited is a word they use but it does not mean what they think it means) for 45 a month. Sprint will happily put you and Him into a nice unlimited plan with new phones for both of you, but it is probably not your best option. Virgin offers unlimited talk, text, and data for 30 a month with the purchase of a phone and it is pay as you go. If you and He are both using iPhones iMessage is free between the two phones... the other people in your life that communicate with if they are also on iPhone it will be no charge on iMessage either.

Again, the best parts for you is the mac stuff talks to each other and plays nice together, the benefit of iMessage between iPhones, and the fact that iMessage will go through your iPhone and/or iPad. I know the virtual keyboard is a problem for you, but you can get a real keyboard for your iPad, and the iPhone keyboard does tilt with the screen making it bigger.

Sounds like you are not doing much of anything web-related with it. My recommendation would be to take a serious look at Trac-Fone. A lot cheaper and they can do everything you mentioned. You buy minutes and airtime only when you need it.

ETA: There are a variety of phones (brand and type) to choose from for the service. Some with buttons some with touch screens.

Going in reverse lol:

His phone is older than mine! :D He outright refuses to upgrade so long as the really old phone works, his is a secondary line on my account. It is one of his adorable quirks.

Yeah I can just see Cheddar (iMac) and Elbow (iPad) along with an iPhone all in cahoots against me, the uprising of the machines against humanity! I will lose. Hee.

I'd honestly prefer to stay with Verizon, a lot of friends without Verizon bitch about spotty coverage around here.

So um remember I'm lacking the tech vocabulary here. If I transfer photos and stuff to Cheddar, it doesn't count against storage on the phone? Is there any way to determine or essentially label "twenty pictures = X amount of a data plan"? Along with "sixty texts = X amount of a data plan" etc. The data plan is like this weird nebulous thing to my brain.

RE cops n such, the law (I think) says it must be hands free whether driving, on a motorcycle or bicycle. So I'm thinking earbuds would work. Or bluetooth. I want whichever is easier to hook up and use. Easy = happy for me.

My current dead dear phone was never hooked up to the internet, so I've no idea if I'd do that a lot with an iPhone or not! I'm guessing not since I'm mostly home with an iMac and iPad. But it would be great for those frequent times I'm lost lol. I get lost a lot.

I'd likely use a GPS function at least once a week, and occasionally it would be nice to just Google stuff while out and about.

Definitely photos.

I feel like such a luddite! I'm genuinely intimidated by the very idea of a smart phone. I hate hate hate that Apple products don't come with a nifty handy-dandy booklet of assistance.

As far as the user guide goes, most can be found online if you Google them. You should be able to find one for whatever phone you end up getting.

Now that would be helpful! 'They' say Apple products are intuitive, well not so much folks. Not so much at all. Not for me. For me they are illogical and balky things.

It doesn't matter how "intuitive" they are, I always find it isn't enough and need a user guide. By the way user guides for appliances also tend to be online these days. I like it, there's much less clutter that way, bookmark it and it's available any time you like and the parts you need to refer to frequently can always be printed out.

It sounds like the 2GB would be enough for you, especially if you keep the WiFi on at home.
We have unlimited data (not commonly offered anymore but we're grandfathered in), but we use our phones for everything. Since I work on a laptop all day long, an actual computer isn't something I want to touch often.

I'm pretty sure the fee for the data plan is the fee for just the data plan, meaning your bottom line will be more than that. But don't quote me, the man handled all this for us.

I love iPhones. They're really easy to use. My own mother was hesitant to get one but quickly fell in love with its ease of use. I have the iPhone 6, just upgraded after having the original 4 with a broken back glass for quite some time. Had I thought about it, I would have opted for the 5. The 6 is not too easy for me to hold. It's too large to hold and type with one hand and so slim it tends to slip out of my hands.

I've had great luck with Verizon in the past, but it's been years. We had AT&T and service was spotty - we didn't have good signal at our house. We just switched to Sprint (and was hesitant to do so, but wasn't my call) but so far, coverage seems better.

The man set up the Bluetooth in my car - not that I'll use it. I'd rather just not talk in the car than figure out how to use it :)

Good luck! I know, there's so many different phones, plans, options...it overwhelms me.

ETA: oh, and with the iPhone, you can always ask Siri how to do something and she should be able to point you in the right direction.

One thing I really regret is getting a plan with unlimited text and call and 6 G of data. I don't use the phone to make calls all that much, I don't text as much as I used to due to chronic hand pain, and I don't use even close to 6 G since I now tend to search using my laptop. Unfortunately I'm stuck with the remainder of a 3 year contract which I also regret. So camille be VERY careful with the plan you choose if the free phone is dependent on signing a contract especially if it's 3 years or so.

I get a free 5C iPhone with a two year contract. Then I have to choose the data thingie which is where you all have been super helpful.

I'm way slow when it comes to learning new technology. Way slow. So slow it is as if my IQ drops by fifty points, or more.
