TheBanshee -> Random "wrong" numbers ?? (1/30/2015 3:09:58 PM)

I'm curious if I'm missing some kind of scam here. I have been getting a surge of unusual random calls from odd numbers, usually hang ups if I answer but the name and number is on my caller ID and some of the same numbers keep coming up over and over. I have called back a few times and often they are non-English speaking (many of the names are Asian or Spanish, sometimes Russian). One number is from a Spanish Bodega (I have never been there, I had to look it up). Some of the names that pop up sound very fictitious.

When I've called back as I've said, I usually get a heavily accented voice saying "Oh, Sorry - wrong number" (then why is there a history of you calling this number 8 times in two weeks?)

I have a flat rate nationwide phone so I'm wondering if someone is hacking to call their home country? I haven't gotten charged for any international calling (I'm not even sure if that's included, I haven't called outside the country recently at all).

Any other ideas? Should I be concerned? Is anyone else experiencing anything like this?

Try putting the full number into a search engine?

I would check with your state police. Most have a state-level version of the FBI (usually called: SBI). They are usually well-equipped to handle any crimes that might be associated with this.

Certainly, it's worth a call, even if you get told there's nothing to worry about.

If it's a google voice number, that happens. Also if it's a new # you just got from someone else. I used to get calls for a ********* ****** from an 800number and it was always the same voice and I'd always tell him wrong#. I have no idea what's going on with the cell phone companies, this didn't happen before. My guess is a debt collector who uses a foreign entity to follow up with negligent debtors. Mine went on for months but were infrequent. You can block the #. Most androids make it easy now.

Hi Camille,
Yes, I have put the full number in google - the numbers usually offer little help alone, although I could pay to find out the names of the owners of the numbers. The names that come up seem bogus - an inital and a 3 letter last name for instance. But the Spanish market name was valid with the number. A few others were valid names but non-English speaking when I called back.

Hi GoddessManko,

I've had this number well over 10 years - this started happening just a few months ago and it is my landline (through the cable company).

Hey there yourself,

Got a bit of bad news. It might be a scammer. A recent scam I became aware of is someone calling pretending to be Microsoft and telling me I have a virus on my computer. You have to be really careful with cold calls. My guess (worst case scenario) is someone testing out to see if you're home for one reason or another. Part of my problem with social media and people "checking in" to places.

Or, it may just be an introduction to the wonderful world of VOIP robocalls.... the scum sucking telemarketer's dream. I get sick of calls interrupting and nothing being there but dead air... unless you wait for a minute or two (literally) and find out you have won a free visit to a time share whatever.

It's tax time and there's an IRS scam going around too. I've received this call a few times over the past week, he gives his name, badge #, says the IRS found you've been hiding money and if you don't pay the taxes immediately you will be arrested. I was at my mom's house the other day and there were 2 messages on her answering machine with this scam. The IRS has a scam warning on their web site about it.

Yeah one of those is an announcement that you've won a free cruise.

I don't answer numbers I don't recognise. I check them out on google first to find out who they are. I most certainly would not call them back as some can redirect you to high rate call lines.
