ORIGINAL: Lucylastic I thought given that Wolf Hall was mentioned in the OP I would add this little snippet I found this morning http://www.catholicherald.co.uk/news/2015/02/02/bishops-criticise-perverse-depiction-of-st-thomas-more-in-wolf-hall/ I can only view the first half of the article, Lucy, so not sure if it also mentions that Thomas Cromwell had a network of spies and informers to embarrass Pol Pot, and he effectively circumvented the King having to seek Parliamentary authority to raise taxes by stealing vast swathes of land and wealth during the dissolution of the monastries. He also blackmailed the Priests to go quietly. An exceptionally ruthless man, but he had spent a lot of time in Italy and could speak the language fluently (although not sure which one as Italy was not a country in those days), and give his actions regarding the King as ruler it is fair to say that he had read and been persuaded been by Machiavelli. The programme presents Cromwell as a wise man vested in listening rather than talking, but as yet none of the excesses have been on display.
