Recently, I moved to central Pennsylvania where it is very rural. After decades of city living I am in love with my new digs. Low cost of living, honest, non-pretentious folks and beautiful landscapes. Interestingly, when I now reject a potential suitor he often includes the adjective "redneck" to the above mentioned insults. I'm assuming it's because of where I now live.
My question: Has anyone else had insults based on where they live?
From the time I was a kid, growing up in Brooklyn, we called anything that wasn't Philthadelphia or Pittsburgh "Pennsyltucky". It came to us because a friend had a cousin from Philthadelphia and he said that was just the way it was.
Now, I find myself living in Pennsyltucky (Check my location under my avatar). I have to admit that everything you said about the heartland of Pennsyltucky is accurate. I LOVE it here (except for the damned weather).
I think there are lots of places that have an ages-old tradition of being trashed upon. Cleveland is "The Mistake on the Lake". Flushing, Queens is usually referred to as: "A good idea".
In the Army, there were always nicknames for different posts/places.
Fort Wegotcha (Ft. Huachuca, Az.), Ft. Lost-In-The-Woods, Misery (Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo.), etc.
I've never been one to take any of it too seriously.
