crumpets -> Are BDSM D/s advertisements really going mainstream? (2/2/2015 6:15:34 AM)

Dunno, maybe it's 50-shades-of-gray after years of quiescence following The Stoy of O, or something, but, did Dominoes just do a kinky D/s advertisement mockup for spicy Sriracha's out of Israel?

I think the fact a nipple flash (which almost everyone has seen at some point in their lives) was taboo but a BDSM commercial is OK just shows how much hype is surrounding this movie. It's D/s's Hannah Montana. They even made yogurt and light bulb covers out of her. Hopefully all the commercialism pays off. The Dom in the Nymphomaniac series was not a very wealthy man with few tools but he almost made me spill my coffee.

The ad agency dreamed it up but it never was accepted or run. Someone leaked it.

I don't expect that kind of advertising trend to last too long after the 50 Shades hype dies down. It's just a tool they're using to get people's attention, and eventually people who are eating the kinky phenomenon up will get bored with it and the ad industry will have to move on to a new topic.

What??? 100 million books sold or some such?? why not jump on the bandwagon?

That's what I'm saying, but the hype won't last forever. Even now, when people hear "50 Shades of Grey" their first thought is to the movie, not the books.

And, the books are better because???

How the hell did you come to that conclusion?

All I'm saying is that there is hype surrounding both and it will eventually die down. It's already died down from the books. The movie's time will end eventually, and with that the ad campaigns capitalizing from its hype.

crumpets -> RE: Are BDSM D/s advertisements really going mainstream? (2/2/2015 1:14:19 PM)

I just noticed the original picture was replaced by a picture of a blonde, so, I'm not sure if the mods stepped in (maybe the picture linked to was too big?) but notice in the Dominoes ad that they say in bold letters "You're going to suffer, and enjoy every moment" at the same time.

Heh heh ... someone at the ad agency in Israel has a fetish imagination.

Oh dear freaking hell. It's what I interpreted from what you said..."their first thought is to the movie, not the books".

My most humble, abject apologies if I misinterpreted your meaning.

RockaRolla -> RE: Are BDSM D/s advertisements really going mainstream? (2/2/2015 1:50:56 PM)

I was talking about mainstream hype from my first post in the thread. Not a word on what was "better."

My comments are really not that cryptic. Sounds like you just wanted to get your claws in something.

Yup, I certainly need to keep my claws "sharpened".

My bad for having misinterpreted your words. *bows*

Now, to the thread at hand...

What is the issue anyway with the "mainstream BDSM" thing? Why does it matter if Joe, Jill or Jim down the street suddenly tap into their kinky side? I mean, unless one is so insecure as to compare their relationships to those of others?

My implication, in posting, was that, by going mainstream, people "think" they understand fetish, but, in reality, they don't.

Why not?
Because, as we all know .. it's not always what some people think it is.

But that's what mainstreaming is -- sanding down the rough edges of something so there are less things that people might object to. So inherently, the "mainstream" version of anything is going to be an incomplete picture.

Aibo -> RE: Are BDSM D/s advertisements really going mainstream? (2/3/2015 12:18:53 AM)

The example by the Op is somewhat freaky indeed.

But around here BDSM themed ads have been around for decades, since smoking was known by people in general to be unhealthy the cigarette companies tried to sell it as a dangerous pleasure with whip wielding dominatrix ladies. I remember one with a couple with the man in business suit, and the lady in leather. And a second one a single lady with a very fancy leather outfit whip in hand and the cigarette in the other. She looked older, and for some reason I have a hunch they had managed to find one actual enthusiast for that image since she really were not one of the run of the mill photo model stuff.
Then the cigarette advertising legislation was changed, and since then we only are shown the boxes, no more SM there.
Though offhand I also remember one MC ad, again a dominant now together with the motorcycle, and a caption that was something like 'can you tame this one'. So once again the 'danger' theme.
Cars that almost universally are sold as 'safe' only comes with latex dressed females, still a fetish theme, but only marginally OT for this subject. =)

I didn't realize there was a concrete thing called "fetish" to understand.

As an example, you ask 10 different subs what their relationship with their Dom/me looks like, and you will get 10 different answers. Does one particular type of answer indicate a better understanding of what "fetish" is? And who judges this?

And, why does it even matter?

Missokyst -> RE: Are BDSM D/s advertisements really going mainstream? (2/3/2015 8:14:01 AM)

I don't think there is an issue with mainstream BDSM.  Cartoons even from long ago had cross-dressing bunnies, small dogs having to play a torture wheel at the whim of larger dogs, Peter and Lois have sessions where safe words are involved, bdsm has always been out there.
I am not really seeing anyone here insecurely comparing their relationship to ad-work.  What I am seeing is people acknowledging that what each of us does is unique and with more variety than a 60 second (+) clip.
As far as fetishes go I don't regard what I do as a fetish.  No one thing is absolutely necessary for me to be involved sexually.  The biggest fetish I have seen so far is arguing for the sake of arguing.  Oh.. and the use of multiple question marks to push their views above others.

Actually, that was not my point.

My point, and the questions that followed it, have to do with *why* there seems to be such a backlash against WIITWD "going mainstream"-- whether it be in advertisements, books or movies. It seems to me that some people are taking these things as some sort of affront to their own relationships. Why does it matter whether Jane or Tom reads a book or sees a movie, and decides "gee, I'd really like to do that"?

The OP has brought up the issue of people "not understanding fetish", which I think speaks to this.

Missokyst -> RE: Are BDSM D/s advertisements really going mainstream? (2/3/2015 12:18:20 PM)

Weird. I am not seeing that at all. My take on the comments are people are commenting on whether or not people will still "get it" when they see the movie. People being individuals with different backgrounds means OF COURSE not everyone will get it. Seems like that would be a given.

And, at the risk of "abusing question marks", I will ask you...what in the world is the "it" to get?
