Snow/iceballs can't hurt

quote:

On December 23, 1995, San Diego Chargers equipment manager Sid Brooks was struck by an ice ball and knocked unconscious by unruly New York Giants fans at the Meadowlands. Similar to that 1968 Eagles game, it was the home finale of a terrible season for the Giants and fans were frustrated. But unlike the Philly Santa incident, players were pelted so badly that the game had to be stopped and each team went to their benches until order was restored.

Part of proper gun ownership/responsibility is making sure that your weapon doesn't wind up in the wrong hands.

I'm sure the gundiots will be along to explain how irresponsibility is okay, in this case.

When the snowball has a rock in it, and is being thrown in an attempt to injure. And that's the problem, the cop won't know if it's a rock inside until after he's lying unconscious. They're people and they're scared. Frightened people over react.

The article said the teens were throwing snowballs at an intersection and people were calling this in. What that says to me is that they weren't throwing the snowballs at each other but at pedestrians and cars. And where I come from a snowball fight means they're throwing them at each other.

I came around a corner last week into the middle of a snowball fight. I called out "Noncombatant" and the kids stopped until we had passed them. They didn't throw at us. That's a snowball fight. If they were throwing at people who didn't want to be thrown at, that would be unacceptable bullying.

Agreed. It's inappropriate and was appropriately stopped.

If he's frightened by kids with snowballs, this may not be the best line of work for him.

I don't think anyone will ever have all the facts on that crew.

Since I haven't taken a stand on the incident other than agreeing throwing at cars/passersby was appropriately stopped, I don't know what "facts" you're talking about.

My guess is he decided to scare the kids to discourage future incidents (there was another car on the scene).

If that's the case, do I think he could have accomplished the same thing without the weapon? I do. Don't you?

I have found that stories like these very seldom present all the facts... they want the article to be provocative for readership... The anti and pro cops just love to jump on these threads without considering that they are not getting the full story.

But it is fun to speculate and watch the fireworks... Of course taking the story as presented there is no defense for the actions of the police officer...and if true it is an outlandish abuse of power... But... I will bet there is another story. I do hope the citizens of that municipality demand answers.

Since when is snowball a weapon of crime ?

I was driving to a service call one day and there were a group of kids walking down the street. The car in front of me had the unfortunate luck of being the target of a snowball attack. One kid hurled a snowball and as fate would have it, the driver of the car had his window open. It hit the driver in the face, he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a telephone pole. He was seriously injured and was carted off to the hospital, of course the kids didn't stick around to admit their stupidity. The police never caught the kids. The snowball was an instrument of crime.

I did not read the article, just the thread responses. Frankly, a cop drawing a gun on kids might be a little extreme for my liking, however, if the cop prevented one serious accident, and no one was injured by the police officer, then the cop did his job. Let me reiterate for the cheap seats that the cop drawing his gun may have been a bit much, but no one was hurt, that is not saying that it was fully justified, but snowballs with rocks or ice balls can seriously injure a person. If you have any questions about how badly someone can be hurt, I am volunteering my time to hurl snowballs, ice balls and or snowballs with rocks in them at your face to see if you get hurt.

Hey Gauge -- none of that is in question.

Why reading the article might be a good first step.

I admitted I didn't read it. I can go back when I have a minute, but I am on my way out.

I answered his question of when did a snowball become a weapon of crime, that was all.

Apparently, some do.

It was one of those balmy 50's winter days. My window was open too... I was whoring myself to the thoughts and dreams of Spring.

That snowball could have been loaded up with a Muslim. We have to be on our guard.

“There was no snowball fight,” New Rochelle Deputy Police Commissioner Anthony Murphy told the Daily News, calling the video a piece of “clever mischief.”

He said police were responding to a 911 call around 4 p.m. Friday that a teenager standing in a group of six near the Heritage Houses had pulled a gun from his waistband and pointed it at another person. “We dispatched several cars to the area. Police officers got out of their cars and one of the individuals bent down, adjusted something in his waistband and ran,” Murphy said.

As one officer took off after the suspect, another remained with the five teens who did not run, Murphy said. “Don’t f-----g move, guys,” the cop shouts in one of two clips that were sent to the Talk of the Sound.

Two teens can be seen in the video kneeling with their hands in the air. The officer frisks both of them before ordering them to stand up. “The group was compliant,” Murphy said. “(At the same time) the other cop is in foot pursuit of the suspect that had the gun.
