ORIGINAL: slvemike4u All good All quiet on the western front was a great book,I loved it I'm sure though that if we looked we could find some who didn't care for that classic too With all of that being said (and without having read the book or seen the movie), I *do* understand your conflict with the new book, I think. I'm reminded of what happened with "Gone with the Wind". (Granted, different because the prequels and sequels were not written by Mitchell...but still...) Here you have a classic of world literature. (Even though I don't like TKAM, I will freely concede its position as such.) It's also a "one hit wonder" of literature. People *want* more, but, how can it even compare to the first work? Should we even *try* to compare it? In my mind, if the author actually *wanted* to publish a prequel or sequel while they were alive (or of sound mind, as is the case with Ms. Lee), wouldn't they have just done it? I find it terribly hard to believe that publishing houses wouldn't have been falling over themselves to get their hands on anything having to do with the characters in GWTW during Margaret Mitchell's lifetime. Or, if Harper Lee had *wanted* this book to be published over the past decades, wouldn't it have happened? Fact is, it didn't happen. Why is it happening now? Money speaks very loudly. I do hope, for fans of the book, that this one doesn't disappoint. I can certainly understand the concern though. (Star Wars prequels, anyone?)
