The ACA? The stimulus? Taking out OBL? Small stuff compared to a true Obama legacy: redoing the family dining room on the first floor. (Note: For privacy and convenience, First Families now generally eat in the presidential dining room upstairs.) Hate to say it, but the design repels me. I think it reflects the caution, even timidity, that have been such hallmarks of this administration on many fronts, with the result that it's a mishmash--neither ancient nor modern. I actually do *like* the idea of bringing the WH beyond the 19th century, but I don't think this effort succeeds. Thoughts, anyone?

I like the art, but WTF with those 1950's chairs around the table? They kept the worst element in the room!

I like the art but hate the rug.
And mid century modern is very collectible.

Thoughts, anyone?

Reading the responses, it's clear that tastes vary. I think it would have a certain stark elegance if you got rid of those artworks and that rug.

The rug and the picture would look more appropriate with chrome and glass but glare with 19th century fine wood.

The rug is okay to me. I'm not a fan of the artwork at all. They're such a huge contrast to the traditional furniture, especially the bold one between the windows. The curtains are also...not my taste. But, I don't live there.

I prefer the way it looked during the Truman administration.

If this is the family dining room, not a public one, then I think that trying to warm it up to make it someplace people like to sit and talk should have been the focus. And that doesn't say warm and cozy to me, good place for kids to spread out and talk over their day.

I am all for "eclectic" in design, however this goes way too far. IMO, the artwork simply does not work in the space.

I believe one of the problems is the way the area was photographed... In real life the light is much softer and warmer. This alone would give a much different feel to the area. Of course all personal likes and dislikes but to me the rug needs warm not earth colors and could be smaller... I love old wood flooring.

I would also like to see rich red with gold fringe drapery and unlike TheHeretic I believe any art in this circumstance would look much better based on history or landscapes.

To me, that breakfront is the nicest thing in the room by far.

On taking another look, what is really bothering me with this is that light fixture. My eyes are immediately drawn to it and not in a good way.
