Kirata -> Al Sharpton named in $20 Billion Racial Discrimination Lawsuit (2/23/2015 12:42:19 PM)

Al Sharpton and Sharpton's National Action Network are among those being hit with a $20 billion racial discrimination lawsuit

The complaint, filed in California on Friday, comes from the National Association of African-American Owned Media, which also filed a similar suit against AT&T and DirecTV in December. This time, the plaintiff is not only targeting both Comcast and TWC — on the eve of the two companies merging to become what would be the largest pay television distributor in the United States — but also various African-American advocacy groups and MSNBC host Al Sharpton for allegedly facilitating discrimination.

At the time of Comcast's 2010 acquisition of NBCUniversal, Comcast entered into memoranda of understanding with the NAACP, the National Urban League and the National Action Network, but the lawsuit says the voluntary diversity agreements are "a sham, undertaken to whitewash Comcast's discriminatory business practices."

The lawsuit goes on to say that Comcast made large cash "donations" to obtain support for its acquisition. The money includes $3.8 million to Sharpton and his National Action Network. The money, it's charged, was meant to pay Sharpton to endorse the NBCU deal and divert attention away from discrimination. As for Sharpton's MSNBC gig, the complaint says, "Despite the notoriously low ratings that Sharpton's show generates, Comcast has allowed Sharpton to maintain his hosting position for more than three years in exchange for Sharpton's continued public support for Comcast on issues of diversity."

Feel good story of the day.

I thought it was well known that Sharpton shakes down businesses for funds with his race mongering.

Not verbatim, but my initial thought, too.

To sane heads like ours, Lucy, it most definitely is a joke. I hope it's a joke to the US Justice system, too.

Sanity -> RE: Al Sharpton named in $20 Billion Racial Discrimination Lawsuit (2/23/2015 3:02:47 PM)

Cant be. Sharptons obviously kept on MSNBC for his talent.

MercTech -> RE: Al Sharpton named in $20 Billion Racial Discrimination Lawsuit (2/23/2015 3:04:57 PM)

I didn't think there was any question that Al Sharpton was a racist.

Well according to her, "racism is about prejudice and power," and therefore if you don't have power, you can't be racist. By that logic, the Nazis and their successors can't be called racists anymore, because they no longer have any power. That is rank bullshit. She is just redefining the word to promote her own racism.

No, Kirata! It cannot be...a woman...a BLACK woman at that...she could not possibly be wrong about this.

Below is the problem... it needs to go for true racial colorblindness... otherwise it is racist and always has been. Yes there should be laws regarding racial discrimination but not by an organization of a racially exclusive group. There should be no association of black owned media just as there should be no association of white owned... those days should be over. The same goes for understandings with the NAACP or any group of any color... Lets just be sure there is no discrimination period.

PS... leave my distant cousin alone... we share a common ancestor I believe in Strom Thurmond...hmmm I wonder if he has problems spelling?

Thank you, Butch.

I think she's Hispanic, but my favorite line was this one:

Black Nationalism and Afrocentricism are a reaction to white supremacy.

Give that a minute to sink in... Freud would be amused.

I disagree with this.

Freedom of association means that people should be able to group themselves however they would like to.

You want a book club of white women, ages 41-60, with blue hair streaks; more power to you.

You want a group that includes only mothers of twins? Go for it.

You want a group that includes only white males, six foot and above? Go for it.

Be as inclusive or as exclusive as you would like.

There is no good reason to force every group to let anyone that wants to join, join up.

That would not be freedom.

Agreed; with a caveat:

If someone started a group called: (N)ational (A)ssociation for the (A)dvancement of (W)hite (P)eople, they'd be decried, maligned, and probably sued out of existence. Your assertion that that isn't freedom is correct but more dangerous is that we are "establishing" a system where there are two sets of rules (actually more than two) for Americans, based upon the color of their skin.

I've said this, here, before: Some years ago, NYC was going to have a law, making use of "the 'N' word" illegal. I'm not a huge fan of censorship but I understand that some people feel like they have a right to go through life without being "offended" so, my take was: Okay. Whatever.

The law was going to sail right on through until the "hero" of our thread (Fat Al) insisted that the law had to be written to exclude black people from it.

Again, I am not disagreeing with you, per se but what we need is consistency. If the NAAWP cannot exist, the NAACP should not.

That's not what we're experiencing, here. There's a report in the New York Post, today that semi-confirms what Fat Albert's organization is about.

I agree with you that if you want a private club you have a right. But not if you make a profit from the public or you are an organization who purpose is to increase prosperity of one group over another through business or common law.
