I think there will be a slow trickle too and I think its going to come in two stages. The immediate types will be single and on the look out for potential Mr Grey types or in a relationship where the partner shows no interest in playing this little game. The second type and I believe this will take longer to emerge, are the ones who have kinky partners or fuck buddies that are up for this. They will have their fun but it either won't measure up to her expectations or she will become more and more curious about the deeper elements of D/s, BDSM. This is the sort of person we want within our community. Fresh blood that's tried all the tickly bits but now wants to take it further.

Much as I would like to bravely defend our beloved outsider lifestyle from the ignorant hordes and overzealous conservatives, I don't think the high bail has much to do with the case being BDSM-related. This is just another variation of police coming down hard on something media related. The big difference this time is that, unlike Elvis's pelvis and Ozzy Osbourne's Suicide Solution, an actual crime was committed here. People who foolishly believe that the media causes aberrant behavior (as opposed to aberrant people seeking out media that reflects their aberrations) are doubtless salivating over this case as absolute proof.

I hope this doesn't come across as racist...

There are some cultures where consent, and the rights and opinions of women are not given much consideration. Some might look at the book and conclude that it validates those cultural ideas. The problem is not the book, but the culture that does not value the equality of women as people.

I don't know, yeah the book might have inspired him, but really , it could have been any sexy book excuse.

The book and movie should have the disclaimer in HUGE letters that all activities "were done by trained professionals and not to try this at home"..

But are any of us "trained professionals"?

It seems people are always looking to blame something other than their own poor choices. In the 80's it was Heavy Metal was making kids attempt suicide. Now it's 50 Shades apparently It's hard to believe that people who read and watch the movie, ACTUALLY think this is the way that an honest BDSM relationship works, or any healthy person would want it to work that way. It's fantasy for a reason. My Dom has heard so much talk on the college campus she tutors at about this. She says it's sometimes hard for her to hold her tongue because of the way people either believe that Grey is a healthy Dom, or they get talking about BDSM, which correlates to what they have read in you guessed it 50 Shades.

I believe a rapist will use any excuse to try and justify their actions. A book or movie isn't going to turn someone into a rapist if those tendencies weren't there to begin with. JMO

This exactly. He had to have already had the those tendencies.

its also what they have been taught as children, as teenagers, as young adults.. if you were taught manners as a child then you grow up into an adult with manners.. if you were taught as a child that a girl wearing a short skirt is "asking for it" and that there are good girls and bad girls then you grow up into an adult thinking that.
