February 27, 2015 Silver Mine Dear Ones --- This morning, I awoke to one of Marjorie’s most spectacular messes yet. Spurred, I fear, by some boneheaded snacking last night, she put out big-time. She filled the bag to the point that stool undid the Velcro closure and began oozing out. But she didn’t stop there. She disgorged plenty more output, which broke through the bag seal to flow, lava-like, across the vast plains of my belly. The bag was a mess, my pajamas were a mess, my midriff was a mess. And when I got up, bits of mess dropped anywhere I walked. Definitely not my favorite way to come to life in the morning! This raunchy reveille may seem an odd spur for counting one’s blessings, but a wise friend—with far more time in the medical trenches than I have—reminded me a few days ago of the vital importance of a positive focus. “Pay attention to what you can do,” she counseled, “not what you can’t. See the blessings as well as the bummers.” That sage counsel in mind, I challenged myself to find some silver linings to this morning’s misadventure. Here’s my list: I woke up. I was clearly sleeping soundly! I didn’t face my usual battle to get out of bed. No temptation to linger this morning! My briefs and PJs contained the mess, so the sheets remained clean. It happened at home, where shower and clean clothes were handy. Elsewhere, what was an annoyance could have been a disaster. I stayed calm and dealt with the situation. I learned yet another thing I can survive. I know that my innards are working. The day could only improve, as it did. And now it’s time for a new night’s sleeping—to be followed, I hope, by a far less eventful morning! Thanks and love to you all! Cheers, DC
