"It's made out of people" . . . not really. But it is a synthesized food product designed as a total meal replacement, as in every meal, just like Soylent Green.

Jeeeeeez.

That is a terrible idea.

Soy is a food thought to cause thyroid problems, and for sure makes them worse.

I'm full in the camp of enjoying real food. But perhaps I'll buy some of this in case the zombie apocalypse finally hits. Of course- I won't be able to get my thyroid meds easily...so I guess I should be saving some of them here and there too so I can eat this shit when we all run out of food.

Also, "food without the work" is so very far from what we used to have to do. I think its strange thats even a marketing point...

It makes me feel like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaerR-aB57Y

I could see this stuff working for people that have no digestive issues, but it wouldn't work for me. I could also see it working for people that were weaned onto it, and never knew any other food stuffs. for me though I am a huge meat eater, and it causes me a lot of issues if I don't eat a high animal protein diet.

As far as I'm aware, there is little scientific evidence for soy causing thyroid problems, provided a diet has adequate iodine, at least. Granted, in large quantities, it seems it can interfere with hypothyroid medications.

In any event, thyroid effects are a moot point when it comes to Soylent. Despite the implications of the name, Soylent is not a soy-based (or human-based) product. The protein in the current forumlation comes from brown rice. Past, pre-1.0 formulations used whey protein and, later, a mix of rice and pea protein. Soylent does use a little bit of soy lecithin as an emulsifier, but this should be nearly devoid of phytoestrogens and soy proteins. Soy lecithin is generally even considered safe for consumption by most people with soy allergies.

I personally tend to enjoy both cooking and consuming interesting food. Nevertheless, I can pretty easily see the appeal to some who don't enjoy those activities as much of not needing to spend time preparing food, while still getting something nutritious and relatively inexpensive. I admit there are even times I would likely find that convenient. That Soylent is so far from how food has been done in the past is kind of the whole point for the target market - the goal is to, within the admittedly narrow and spartan constaints of nutritious, quick, easy, efficient, and inexpensive, be better than existing options. I've found the engineering-style process that's driven its development interesting to casually follow, even if I'm not exactly craving the chance to slurp down a pitcher of the chalky-textured result myself.

Possibly not the best option for that as it's not optimized for long-term storage. The guaranteed shelf life is only one year. But don't worry, other companies can save your bacon in that scenario. :)

I am going to repect that opinion but choose to listen to my endocrinologist instead of you, no offense.
It is a goitergen and its estrogenic properties also are thought to effect thyroid function. All I know is if my doctor tells me it's gonna make this huge lump in my neck bigger, and make it move slower- I am going to avoid it.

I see it working well in instances of starvation or food deserts- has anyone heard of them donating it at all to those causes?

ETA- auto correct made it desserts not deserts and it totally made that sentence mean something different...
