Here's wishing everyone, both in India and abroad, a very happy holi.

For those of you who dont know what this is about, holi is a national festival celebrated in India, aptly called the festival of colors. The festival is meant to announce the completion of winter and the start of fresh spring. On this day, people of all walks of life reach out on the streets with colored powder and water and amply hue up everyone in their path (after seeking a moderate level of consent). Usually they end up looking completely unrecognizable by the end of this adventure. Evenings are reserved for time with family and sharing sweets.

For some reason unknown to me, holi is also considered a very romantic occasion , and lovers all over take the opportunity to touch, cuddle and fondle their special ones and drench them in color. Agreeably this leads to some unwanted events too, but mostly its in good spirit, and most dont mind, just for this day.

I extend to everyone my wishes for this wonderful festival, and hope the colors of joy touch your lives this year.

Thanks, and just FYI...

Holi celebrates the ultimate triumph of good over evil. The legend goes that the demon king Hiranyakashyap (or Hiranyakashipu) once commanded that all should worship him, but was refused by his son Prahlad, a stalwart devotee of Vishnu. Seeking to have his son killed for this disloyalty, the demon king failed every time because Vishnu protected his devotee. Finally Hiranyakashyap convinced his sister Holika to trick Prahlad into joining her in the midst of a blazing pyre. Holika had received a boon that protected her from fire, but unbeknownst to her it only applied if she entered the fire alone. Holika was consumed, but Prahlad chanted the name of Lord Naarayana and emerged unscathed. Part of the Holi celebration consists of building bonfires, which reprise the burning of Holika and represent the destruction of evil and the triumph of the good.
