I bet he will after 3 weeks. Maybe we should wait for more information before getting out the tar and feathers. Yes. That advice goes for everyone. Cop may have gone overboard but the firearm is the fastest to deploy, and the dead man was attacking the officer. Attacking? Are you sure? He had not been violent toward anyone up to that point, and in fact one person...I think it was the grounds keeper...said he had been hugging the disturbed man just a few minutes before the man was killed. Just running toward someone does NOT necessarily equal "attack". You should remember the advice you wrote in your first line. As we saw in the LA case a tazer doesn't always stop them and if it didn't the cop was up the creek. In at least one report I read, it said that the incident was responded to by officers...plural, meaning there was more than just the one officer there. We know that this officer had a tazer. My guess is that he also had pepper spray and a baton. With backup nearby, with a tazer, probably with pepper spray and a baton, this officer automatically goes for the most lethal method of dealing with a naked, unarmed man. Exactly which creek was it that this officer would have been up? If MAYBE a tazer might not work; and if MAYBE pepper spray might not work; and if MAYBE a baton might not work; and if MAYBE having backup nearby won't help, what is the point of even carrying them or sending out multiple responders? There is little doubt that when the information came over the police radio about the incident the officers going there knew that the "suspect" was naked, PROBABLY meaning that the guy had mental issues. The reports say the officer parked "some distance" away. So I would think he had time to think at least a little bit about what would be the best method of dealing with a naked individual. This officer apparently decided the best method of dealing with him was to shoot him. Good thing he did too! If he hadn't he would probably been up some creek getting his feet wet! (sarcasm) I have not made up my mind on this one yet, as I said we need to wait and get more information. I will point out however that when the guy is charging you do not have time to see if the tazer works, then to see if the pepper spray works, then see if the baton works. It is not clear how many officers were there. That is a piece of information that is very important in this case. The more officers, the less justification. I AM NOT assuming the officer was correct, but as pointed out the OP is starting from ...... the cop is guilty, lets find an excuse why. We have seen too many cases with an initial report like this that turned out to be completely different when all the facts came in.
