We're contemplating a trip to the upper peninsula of Michigan for summer to enjoy a few points of interest. One of which requires travel by boat. We can either take a boat tour or go by kayak. We're leaning towards the latter but...we've never even sat in a kayak. How does kayaking compare to canoeing? The tour group I'm looking at offers three and six-hour tours...could six possibly be too much for newbs? I don't have great arm strength, but I can canoe for hours (at a leisurely pace).

Oh yay, kayaking! I'm so happy summer is officially here. (Come to FL if you get impatient). Kayaking and tubing down the river and jetskiing/waterskiing, tubing and boating on the lake. Making many new friends so should be a blast.

I'm incredibly excited to get in the water this year! We are planning to spend a lot of the summer on a boat, if weather permits. Last year, we had a pretty lousy summer in terms of weather. We have to make up for it!
We were originally thinking a trip to Florida but really wanted to do something we haven't yet done or a place we haven't yet been.

Well if you guys like to try different places, Chicago is amazing in the spring, tulips all over the city. I'd recommend the aquarium and the Art Institute. I really fell in love when I went around May-ish.

I was looking forward to trying out kayaking this year, but everyone I've talked to said it does take a lot of upper body strength. You might want to try it out in a more leisure setting than on a 6 hour tour :)

Kayaking is a bit more...squirrelly in my experience than a canoe. There is some additional training you should have (how to roll/get out of you flip it).

If you or your guy are bigger people- this is not the time to be modest- be honest about weight and height because you need appropriate sizes kayaks- really. I have a friend who bought one just....on a whim- he is 6'5" and 350 lbs. he rolled it ten times in five minutes because it was too small.

It's really fun once you get the hang of it. I haven't been out since my back surgery because it does wear my back out.

Oh yeah ... the next day you'll discover muscles you didn't even know you had after a few hours in a kayak. OTOH, it's a great way to get some exercise & fresh air.

On my bucket list is to get a 16' seagoing kayak & paddle from Alki Point (ok, maybe only Mukilteo) in Seattle up to Port Townsend w/ a bottle of wine ... and get some ripe Seastack cheese at Mt Townsend Creamery. Good stuff. AND I'd burn off ALL the calories!

But ... not a lotta opportunity for that anymore AND can't find anyone who'd be up to such a trip.

Guess I've gotta cross that & a winter assault on Everest off my list this year. Darn!

LOVE kayaking
took a lot of lessons in the UK when I was about 12-13, and my dad built me a snipe to go white river when I was 17, its probably partially why I now have arthritis in my spine and shoulders:)
I havent been for many years...at least since I left the UK, but it brings back an urge to do it again:)
I tubed alonng the Shenandoah and the Potomac a couple of summers ago, I could have stayed for days, apart from the pesky peeing and eating stuff, I like to travel light on the water.
I love swimming and water parks, but yes I think I might try kayaking again this coming summer:)
the paddles rotation and strain on your shoulders is what hurts. Oh and your hips if you turn over a lot....if you do a roll, you need to have good hips to help...I practised in a swimming pool for weeks.... we had a pro teaching us and he came to help me roll, I had to hold onto his hips and flick my hips to get upright, cept me, I grab a hold of his trunks, as I flip, I cant quite get up so hanging on to him for dear life, and my hands slid down taking his trunks with him. In the end I popped myself out, opened my eyes to see where i was going and was face to crotch with his...impressive, even underwater junk.

i did have the decency to blush, he hadnt even realised.....aaaaaaah youth, is wasted on the young:)
Sorry for the ramble but I enjoyed the memory:)

Man. Buzz kill. But thank you. I have my concerns, obviously, and glad I asked instead of setting those concerns aside and finding out halfway through the journey.

Thanks for the tip! We've been a few times (we have family that lives close to the city). We've actually only been when it's incredibly hot or too incredibly cold so I think that may have affected our enjoyment a little. It is a pretty city.

Lol...yeah. I was thinking the three hour tour, he wanted to go balls to the walls. Hopefully we'll be able to find a moment or two to try it out beforehand. Not entirely certain we will, though.

Yeah, that's kind of one of my fears...tipping over. I'm comforted in knowing this is a tour group and we would be with people who know what they're doing, but still. I know the company has a few different kayaks to choose from so I'm assuming they'd also fit us to the right size. We're not bigger people (height or weight), so I hadn't even considered that to be an issue but makes sense.

Hahahaha. Thanks for the imagery [:D]

This helps. Exercises in preparation is definitely doable.

Is there any other weather in Chicago than increadably too hot or too cold?
