I received a message from another user who mentioned a particular consumer item in her message. Suddenly I'm seeing ads for that exact item all over the web when I browse. I understand ads being tailored to ones google search inquiries etc., but this level of intrusion is very creepy. Wow.

Check your cheese. I hear they plant listening devices in your cheese.

I haven't had that experience here, but sometimes items I've browsed at my medical-supply provider's site show up in ads on Facebook and elsewhere.

That does creep me out a bit and annoy me a lot. If I'm relaxing online, I don't wanted to be reminded of my medical life.

Script blockers and adblock plus.

I haven't seen an ad in 10 years online.

Tin foil hats don't work. A Faraday cage is what is required to keep out aliens, spooks, and obnoxious responders to sincere posts.

Yea, the ads. I wouldn't mind so much if they advertised something interesting but I always get ads for things I've already bought and don't need to shop for any more.

Oh come now, if you want obnoxious, I can be obnoxious. My response was more playful than anything.

Do you run an ad blocker? When is the last time you cleared browsing history, temporary files and cookies? Do you run a script blocker? What are your browser privacy settings? When is the last time you did a virus scan? When is the last time you did your system updates? If you answered any of those questions with either a "no" or an "I'm not sure" then I would suggest to you that you learn how to do those things.

The Internet works for businesses because we forfeit some of our privacy and they track out clicks etc to see our interests and they tailor our online experience to it so they can maximize their ad revenue. A few simple steps as an end user can limit that tracking ability and can actually eliminate ads altogether... or at least most of them.

Direct advertising is a clever little demon. A few days ago I lost a bid on a pair of second hand boots from Ebay. Yesterday I was doing something well away from ebay when an advert popped up for almost identical new boots. I have to say, I was impressed
