The reality is that the word means whatever the fuck the person using it wants it to mean, which is to say it's meaningless.

Like the word 'God'?

Yes, like the word God.

(Did that work out the way you planned?)

It worked out one of the two ways I imagined it would. The idea of 'homophobia' - this idea of 'political correctness' and the way the people who use it are so loathed - that loathing *does* look a lot like a 'phobia', regarding both fear and hate, to me and when talking about some people. Not a god, but the opposite: some sort of megapowerful modern day Satan.

You figured it was a win-win proposition for you, eh? [:D]

Nah. I just figured you'd help me make a point, one way or the other. Thanks, K. :-)

I'm surprised you even considered the possibility that I would give you any other answer.

FR

In my experience, a lot of folks use homophobe not as a clinical diagnosis but in the same way they'd use Anglophobe or Francophobe.

The problem is this for me...And, I feel pretty sure, for some others. I can have gay friends and gay family and still disagree with the gay person who d lands that some straight person disregard my BELIEFS to do what he wants me to do to support HIS beliefs. That...no matter what someone thick thinks...down make me a homophobe, nor does it make me sexually prejudiced. I hate religious zealots...Christian, Islam, Buddhist, the idiots of the Westboro Baptist Church. That doesn't make me an atheist or "not a true Christian".

In either case, what it does make me is someone in disagreement with an individual's or a group's (WBC) tactics.

Maybe we should do away with these labels than.....would that work ?
Obviously you see no validity to either term.

what you wrote is not suggested by my post. how about just using them when they are applicably valid, as opposed to willy nilly throwing them about and redefining them to suit the leftist agenda?

JVoV -> RE: Indiania can now discriminant against anyone (4/6/2015 3:08:21 AM)

Phronemophobia does seem more fitting.

I just googled that. Ye gods, what a horrible state of mind to be in.

thompsonx -> RE: Indiania can now discriminant against anyone (4/6/2015 6:30:34 AM)

Oh noes, not a bill modeled on a federal statute that the Supreme Court has already upheld? Say it ain't so!

It ain't so.

thompsonx -> RE: Indiania can now discriminant against anyone (4/6/2015 6:35:36 AM)

Sorry, missed the point in this brief description of the bill were it said they couldn't serve people because of sexual orientation. Making people do something is tyranny, allowing them to decide for themselves what they will do is not.

Are traffic laws tyranny? Are laws against murder tyranny? Why is it tyranny to force builders to put railings on stairways?

This may sound like a dumb question but do you have 'Right of Refusal' laws over there, whereby management or business owners reserve the right to refuse service to anybody ? We have it here but it's usually reserved for drunks and troublemakers but the way the notices are worded, they could equally apply to anybody.

It is the same here mate...but the sign is just a form of subtle intimidation. In my country if you have a public business you must serve the public...(there are specific exclusions) You may refuse service for cause but not for whim.

Throughout the ages, people have always found "reasons" why not everyone should be equal under the law.

It's as if they believed there could be one.

Excuses = "reasons"

Yes! In a free society, it is imperative that people are prosecuted for the way they think!

Michael

That seems more than a little narrow minded don't you think?

while there are studies providing bits of evidence of gay people being born gay, so far the scientific community has been loathe to say that it is proven.

Just as they were lothe to agree that the sun did not revolve around the earth.

Yes, but once it was proven definatively, no one has been able to disprove it or even imply...with bits of evidence...that it's wrong.

this has been hinted at previously---solutions that lead towards marketplace driven ones as opposed to government legislation ones are probably the most effective, less contentious, and personally satisfying as well.

A cusory study of american history would indicate that you are mistaken.

You seem to have misssed the point of the statement.
The sun has never revolved around the earth even though many ignorant fools believed it did. The fact that ignorant fools believed believed this for more than a thousand years after it was proved wrong is no different than the ignorant fools who believe their imaginary friend does not approve of gays.

thompsonx -> RE: Indiania can now discriminant against anyone (4/6/2015 7:36:53 AM)

Most states provide businesses the right to refuse service for any reason, or no reason, except for protected groups.

So a known or easily identifiable neoNazi can not only be refused service at a Jewish deli, but also trespassed from the premises by the police.

The same holds true for gang members of any flavor.

You are mistaken. You may only refuse servce for cause. If a hells angel or david duke walks into your bakery or photo shop and wants service you had best serve them or face a serious civil suit.

thompsonx -> RE: Indiania can now discriminant against anyone (4/6/2015 7:38:44 AM)

If you don't want to serve a group you lose their business and the business of those people offended by the policy. Self punishing behavior.

The history of blacks being denied service seems to point to a basic falacy in your arguement.
The fact is that blacks make up about 13% or the american population. If that did not cause any self punishing behaviour how could a singe digit demographic cause one?
