What I find more interesting is the lengths one will go to to parse a word so that it means what they want it to be.

The hydrophobic effect is the observed tendency of nonpolar substances to aggregate in aqueous solution and exclude water molecules. The word hydrophobic literally means "water-fearing,"

literal meaning

and it describes the segregation and apparent repulsion between water and nonpolar substances.

Descriptive meaning.
Because both the water and the nonpolar substance do not have the ability to "fear" So by all the parsing this would mean that the word hydrophobic cannot exist.
If someone is homophobic I will point it out and not worry about what they fear.

unreal isnt it??
Gooood gawd,
If you use your religion as an excuse to discriminate and hate, against ANYONE, then try excuse it and try to justify it, you are lying to yourself.
There is no war on christians, there IS a movement against bigotry wrapped in religion.
There are more than ten christian organisations that are more than a lil peeved at the RFDA, and havent been shy about it.
they include
Presbyterian Church
Episcopalians,
Unitarian Universalists
Disciples of Christ...
United Church of Christ

Hydrophobic is a metaphor. Homophobic is too often used to imply literal fear, and mental defect in the bargain.

No it is a word with the meaning I posted.

I am 70 and I have met lots of homophobes who were not the least bit fearful of homosexuals but they did want to hurt, maim and kill homosexuals. That they were mentally defective is without doubt. So I have no problem calling those punkassmotherfuckers homophobes.
Those who are offended by that sentiment can kiss my ass after they get done sucking my cock.
We may all think what we choose but when one puts action to those thoughts there will always be consequences.
My observation is that on this kinkster site we have homophobes who fail to see the hypocracy of seeking to sanction someone elses kink.

It is very precisely a metaphor - a figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable - because neither the water nor the non-polar substance have the ability to fear. The word "homophobia" is neither a metaphor nor typically used as one.

I was unaware that dictionaries published the definitions of metaphors and not words...

This is so true...and it is a shame that many blame religion when it is just fear of change that is at the root of this hypocrisy. This is nothing new... it is just the same battle most every new generation must fight against the previous one.

logically... logic... logic

There is nothing whatsoever logical about arguing that a behavior should be held to be acceptable simply because other lifestyle choices and natural predispositions are acceptable. Not all lifestyles and natural predispositions are analogous simply for the cause that they are lifestyles or predispositions. Watching someone go to such lengths to promote gay equality with bad arguments, a reasonable person might be forgiven for suspecting that the writer couldn't think of any good ones and is just posturing.

Point on to me which post on this thread I stated "logically... logic... logic" ?

If your going to quote someone, try to do it within the CONTEXT. That way it doesnt look like your "...making shit up again....". Because when I mentioned the word 'logic' it was with many other words. You know it and I know it. The difference here, is that I'm being intellectually honest.....

Your welcome to your hatred of gay people as due to your religious viewpoints. Yet, not one thing in your argument is a direct rebuttal to anything I stated. Therefore, your argument is null and void.

I'm not talking about all lifestyles. Just two: Gay and Christian. Likewise, I'm only talking about homosexuality from a nature verse nurture perspective. Christianity is not something one is born; so it can not be placed in comparison to homosexuality. Where as one knows they are homosexual, black, have red hair, or a birthmark on their butt; it takes a book to teach someone about Christianity.

It amuses me how deeply your pushing your religious bullshit down other people's throats; that you fear homosexuality for a number of reasons. None of those have to do with rational thought or study. Hence, why your 'attacking' on each post you push forth. I'm perfectly fine with gay people have the same rights as anyone else. Since if you look at a person, could you tell if they were gay and/or Christian?

Click on the pretty "in reply to" link, or don't you know what an ellipsis is?

You're lying again, this time a two-fer, and as usual without any supporting links. I don't hate gays, and I don't hold any religious beliefs about homosexuality.

It is a direct rebuttal of your claim that the arguments are logical. The clue to this can be found in the quote of you describing them as "logical" and repeatedly referring to your use of "logic" in formulating them.

You're lying again, another two-fer, and as usual (again) without any supporting links. I have never pushed any religious belief on the issue, and I don't fear homosexuality.

You're just a sniveling liar.

I have already tried to educate you, not once not twice but over and over. You either dont get it or dont want to get it, either way you are arguing that a word, with meaning, has no meaning.

Read the top line of the link and educate yourself.

Read the following for the correct use of the word "homophobic"

I am sure those who say there is no such thing as gay hatred when talking about homophobia will have a fit.

What I know is that hydrophobic is a word that is used as a metaphor.
Your definition of metaphor exactly describes the use of the word homophobia.
