Apparently Gov Sam Brownback and Kansas GOP leaders believe there are cruise ships in or near Kansas. Alzheimer's perhaps? Reminds me of that old George Strait song about ocean front property in Arizona. To prevent Kansas recipients from spending their benefits on these cruise ships, their ATM withdrawals will be limited to $25/day.

Yes, indeed! Kansas is land-locked, but unless there's some prohibition against free travel placed on welfare recipients, they could probably drive to the Gulf. No?

If people are able to save enough while on welfare to afford a cruise (a pretty pricey vacation), it suggests to me that they're getting a lot in benefits or they're gaming the system (working off the books).

by the logic of your question, the only people then who could go on cruises would be those who lived in states next to the ocean.

bounty44 -> RE: Cruise ships in Kansas? (4/4/2015 10:45:50 AM)

this is from last year (not cruises, but in keeping with the sentiment of accountability and assuring fidelity to the spirit of helping):

quote:

OSAWATOMIE, Kan. — After a Kansas Watchdog investigation last year uncovered public welfare dollars ending up at strip clubs, casinos and liquor stores, the Sunflower State has finally put some bite into its once-weak welfare restrictions.

During the course of three months during 2012, Kansas Watchdog discovered that state aid recipients withdrew more than $43,000 in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families benefits from ATMs at places like Golden Eagle Casino in Horton, Vegas Video Adult Superstore in Wichita and G Spot, a Junction City strip club, among others.

yes we all like paying taxes so welfare recipients can gamble, buy alcohol (as opposed to essentials) and go to strip clubs. presumably cruise ships have atm's on them.

here's from a couple of years ago:

quote:

In theory, government welfare assistance is designed to help low-income families with few resources. But some Kansans with limited means have found a way to stretch their taxpayer-funded spending to the far reaches of the country.

A Kansas Watchdog investigation into transactions by Sunflower State residents has revealed welfare dollars being spent far from the Kansas border, spanning from coast to coast and everywhere in between...While transactions just across the state line aren’t likely to raise too many eyebrows, it’s hard not to wonder how some of Kansas’ poorest residents need government assistance to scrape by, yet manage to travel to the far corners of the country to spend their welfare dollars.

Or,much more likely in the real world where the rest of us live, this is just another step meant to dehumanize the folks who need this assistance.
One more example of how Republican politicians feel they can be popular with their base by being petty and small minded to those who their base see's as nothing more than "takers"
If you can read this story and think this is a good thing than your humanity has been severely damaged and you need major fucking help.

$69 million in California welfare money drawn out of state

More than $69 million in California welfare money, meant to help the needy pay their rent and clothe their children, has been spent or withdrawn outside the state in recent years, including millions in Las Vegas, hundreds of thousands in Hawaii and thousands on cruise ships sailing from Miami. State-issued aid cards have been used at hotels, shops, restaurants, ATMs and other places in 49 other states, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam, according to data obtained by The Times from the California Department of Social Services.

It's a problem in more places than Kansas.

LOTS of benefits...yeah that does it....
Freed said the agency has “not calculated how much fraud may exist in Kansas,” but that federal officials estimate it is between 1 percent and 4 percent within the food stamp program alone and that there is no reason to think the incidence is less here than occurs nationally. According to agency records, 318,988 Kansans — 176,417 adults and 142,571 children — were on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps) last month. The average per-person benefit was $121. Also in June, 18,550 people received cash assistance that averaged about $111 per person per month. In addition, 8,163 families received child-care subsidies that averaged $353 per month. The federal government pays for most of the three programs, which together last fiscal year cost taxpayers more than $537 million. “They all have potential for fraud,” Freed said, noting that last year the department’s fraud unit won 240 civil judgments against beneficiaries for the return of $941,000 in wrongfully obtained welfare benefits. The fraud unit investigated 2,714 cases last year, up significantly from 1,213 the year before. - See more at: http://www.khi.org/news/article/kansas-doubles-down-welfare-fraud/#sthash.4vRi8fmU.dpuf

I love when you come along and call someone else a partisan hack,do you see yourself as a middle of the road sort of guy ?
Do you for a moment think those on this side of the aisle don't know where your ass is firmly planted ?

You work your side of the street....and the rest of us will work ours. Those of us who are honest with ourselves know which side of the street we are on.....no "partisan hack " should need to be told where they are standing.
I won't pretend to talk for Lucy, but for myself I can damm well tell you I'm real proud of the side of the aisle I sit on [:)]

NO I dont believe in cruises for welfare recipients, neither do I believe a bunch of people brainwashed into the welfare queen myth, have any business deciding for poor people how they MUST live, because they happen to get public money.
Yes it happens everywhere,
I never said it doesnt.

That horse is too big for you, bozo. There's nothing humane or ethical about ignoring the losses of millions of dollars to wholesale fraud.

slvemike4u -> RE: Cruise ships in Kansas? (4/4/2015 11:16:47 AM)

There's nothing intelligent about buying into the myth of welfare queens driving pink Cadillac's either....but you seem to be okay with it.
You also seem to be okay with restricting folks on welfare to 25 dollars a day....which causes all sorts of problems.
But what the fuck, they are on welfare so fuck them right Kirata ?
As I said major damage done to your humanity,go get that checked out ,or not.
Perhaps you are content to walk around being a major league asshole and a prick, your problem your issue...what the fuck do I care [8|]

Lucylastic -> RE: Cruise ships in Kansas? (4/4/2015 11:18:27 AM)

As long as you only care about one type of fraud.

Is there something preventing people in Kansas from leaving that state that those of us not in flyover country are unaware of?

slvemike4u -> RE: Cruise ships in Kansas? (4/4/2015 11:35:00 AM)

Other than alack of financing,no
Tough to get around the corner on 25 dollars a day...forget about getting to a coastal city [8|]

I don't think their total benefit is limited to $25 a day, just their ATM withdrawals.

slvemike4u -> RE: Cruise ships in Kansas? (4/4/2015 11:59:41 AM)

Which in todays high tech world is how they get their money.
They are handed a card and the money is direct deposited each month.
Most of these people do not have checking accounts,so the ATM is how they draw their benefits, the 25 dollar a day thing cause all sorts of real world unintended problems for these people.

MercTech -> RE: Cruise ships in Kansas? (4/4/2015 12:15:45 PM)

If there can be an "Admiral of the Kansas Navy" why not "Kansas Cruise Ships"?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_R._Brinkley

$25 a day seems like a low limit for cash withdrawals but many states limit the withdrawal amounts of TANF funds. But, the withdrawal limits for debit card purchases don't often have a limit or a fee.

That's what I was wondering because only being able to spend $25 at the grocery store could be pretty prohibitive.

slvemike4u -> RE: Cruise ships in Kansas? (4/4/2015 12:41:15 PM)

That's true....but still makes paying rent difficult

On the other hand you have the dehumanizing aspect of the whole thing, honest people realize this whole cruise ship thing(as well as liquor stores and racetracks) are only a small segment of those receiving assistance but tarring all of those with the same brush makes the hateful far right feel good about their day.
"Finally someone is doing something about those no good bums "
It's a narrative that strikes a chord for some on the right, like the few here who are trumpeting this.
I'm telling you Romney might have got more votes is he had taken complete ownership of the 47% taker thing instead of distancing himself.
Never underestimate how many hold hate and resentment close to their hearts.
It's the reason the teap party thing took off for a bit....haters.
