Status: offline 		Thoughts that have arisen after watching a documentary on Mardi Gras:

Having not been, or to Louisiana for that matter, it seems the event is rich in culture and tradition. Outwardly, there is the notion of heavy drinking and girls collecting beads. If it's on the level of the latter, my adult-self says it would be immature to take part. In the realm of wet t-shirt contests or 'mooning'.

Yet, my inner child, who completely skipped those 'wild' teenage activities, feels like something has been missed out on. These types of things are surely harmless when compared to other matters of deviance, right?

Status: offline 		Mardi Gras in New Orleans is all about the latter. Locals usually plan their vacations during Mardi Gras to get away from it. While it is a crazy, badass ride of a party and the food is the shit; the streets stink of urine and stale beer.

Status: offline 		I think that it's perfectly fine to experience the things you want. I'd love to experience Carnival, for example. And watch the running of the bulls in Pamplona. I've done Mardi Gras, and came home with 37 pounds of beads. I also did Bastille Day in Paris. I've Done St. Paddy's in NYC.

Parties are fun! *smiles* Dressing is fun. Letting go is fun. I highly recommend it.

Status: offline 		I'd definitely recommend it. I usually suggest that people who want to experience Mardi Gras go to New Orleans the week before Fat Tuesday. The best parades, IMO, happen in that last week/weekend, and there are lots of fun things going on that *don't* have to do with spending all your time on Bourbon St.

I was at Mardi Gras, once in 1984. I didn't much like it.

Full disclosure: I've only been to two New Year's Eve celebrations in Times Square and the only reason I went to the second one was to escort a foreign friend who wanted to go.

I don't like any place that's overly crowded (maybe a remnant of growing up in NYC).

This is possibly the reason I didn't enjoy Mardi Gras.

That said, we went back through about ten days after Ash Wednesday and what Winsome mentioned as positives is absolutely correct. Great food. Great people. Good times.

I love crowds. I love feeling anonymous and surrounded by humanity. It's exhilarating.

I'm talking about so many people that all you can do is stand shoulder to shoulder and squirm. The Krewes put on a wonderful show, but finding somewhere you can actually see the parades is difficult.

Now, if you want the flavor of Mardis Gras without ginormous crowds; consider a Halloween on Bourbon Street. One night only. Mostly locals. And the annual "Fetish Parade" will have something for any kinky fancy.

The lines forming for the annual vampire ball (Anne Rice fans) are an entertaining sight too.

I was thinking of this-- but, in my experience, it just *isn't* Mardi Gras. Great in its own right, but not the same.

I had the fortune (misfortune?) of living on the parade route in the uptown area. I would suggest that if someone wants the experience-- to go the week before and find a place to stay in the Garden District. Sure, it's crowded, but not overly so. Nothing like seeing the floats coming down St. Charles Ave. and without, generally, the peeing on the walls that happens on Bourbon St.

I'm into BDSM because I like pain. Exposing myself physically has nothing to do with it. Ymmv.

But you're young, so I say save your pennies and throw yourself into the heaving throng. It's what you want, and they definitely want to see the likes of you in a partying mood. Jazzfest is a likewise great party. But you want a rowdy bacchanal, not a cultural experience so much, AmIright?

Or save a bit more and go to Thailand for Songkran (Buddhist New Year) held around the same time. After the airfare hit (only around $900 this time of year), your money will go much, much further. Everyone douses each other with water for good luck with the tourists getting particularly hosed. Giant squirt guns are sold everywhere for about $5.

There is no link between flashing for beads and BDSM. But, there is a strong link between French Quarter nightlife and BDSM. And the people with NOBLE know how to throw a great party.

Mardi Gras is a little like spring break. Great fun if you are in the mood and approach it in the right spirit. Not really something to overthink or over-analyze -- just a fun little experience.

Go for the inner child and...if you feel uncomfortable about "expressing yourself publicly"...I'd imagine this may a good "starter" venue.

Status: offline 		Having been to several NOLA Mardi gras I can say they're fun when you're younger. My preference is Jazzfest. Love the music and the crowds.
