Some people here have disputed the existence of a scientific consensus that global warming is caused by humans. The author of the paper that found 97% of climate change scientific papers affirm that global warming is caused by humans responds to some criticisms of the paper:


" In 2013, I was lead author of a scientific paper that found 97 per cent of relevant climate science papers affirm humans are causing global warming. I have to confess the level of attention our paper received took me by surprise. Our research was widely cited in scientific papers and won an award for best paper of 2013. I’d like to share three little known facts about our research.

First, while the 97 per cent figure refers to the number of papers, we also counted the number of scientists who wrote those papers. We found that 98.4 per cent of the scientists who wrote papers attributing a cause to warming supported the consensus. This further demonstrates the strong agreement among the scientists.

Second, our paper was not the first to find 97 per cent consensus. A 2009 study by Peter Doran at the University of Chicago, and a separate 2010 study by William Anderegg at Princeton University both found 97 per cent consensus among publishing climate scientists. Replication is at the heart of the scientific method. Three separate studies, using three independent methods, found overwhelming scientific agreement that humans are causing global warming.

This brings me to the third fact about our research. We found 97 per cent consensus by reading the abstracts (or summary paragraph) of each paper. But we also invited the scientists who authored the papers to rate their own research. After all, who is more qualified to describe what a paper is saying than the scientists who wrote it? This independent method found 97 per cent of relevant papers were author-rated as endorsing the consensus."

How does one reach consensus on something, if not by comparing one view to another? Of the views expressed, this and other studies have concluded scientists 'voted' on the matter to arrive at an agreed conclusion. They didn't vote, like, one does every four years during a general election. They run the same experiments as others and see if their evidence is similar or like the results of the previous studies. They agree with the previous conclusion when their evidence comes up the same way. To use a metaphor, they 'vote' on the issue confronting them: what does all the data explain?

The scientific community is not just limited to the United States of America, but many countries around the world.

Unlike what we were taught in school..."people thought the earth was flat and columbus would fall off" the consensus of the maritime community was that the earth was in fact round as had been known since the 6th century bc. It appears that the consensus was right. Sometimes the consensus is wrong..."rumble in the jungle".

I don't dispute global warming. But I think science has proven that there's more going on than just pollution.

I think most of us call it Spring.

Not chilly in Florida. Srsly sweatin balls today. And it's only April.

But back on topic:
Even if science proves beyond even a Republican doubt that Global Warming is man's fault, how do we fix it? The US isn't the only contributor, and I dunno that we're even the biggest anymore.

I think we've actually come a long way already in limiting our damage to the environment, and regardless of politics, that will continue because consumers demand it, and it just makes sense.

There are only two companies in the world that make rock drilling bits. They are both here in the u.s. Without rock drilling bits there is no access to what lays deeper than you can dig with a shovel. My first passport said it was not valid for travel to russia and yet I stood on a loading dock watching rock drilling bits being shipped to vladisvostock. I know that titanium is necessary for the manufacture of jet engines. I have seen shipments of russian titanium headed for the foundry that stamped out fanblades for jet engines. This leads me to believe that the cold war was a farce and a scam to milk the taxpayers. I knew a guy who was a third generation b52 flightcrew. When I showed him where the compressor fan blades came from he was surprised to say the least.
Now if the jet engines that power our military come from our so called enemy and our so called enemy gets his oil by drilling with our oil bits it makes me question the validity of the whole shiteroo.

Consumers seldom get what they want. Which consumer wanted 13 ounces in a pound of coffee?
Which consumer wanted 56 ounces in a half gallon of ice cream?
The consumer gets what the mfg decides he wants.
What sort of well designed economy cars were available in the 70's when the price of gas trippled from .30 to a buck? I think the amount of consumer pressure needs to be almost universal before it can be effective.
