Other states have restrictions too, but is lingerie on their list? Apparently bras and undies aren't considered necessities. Next they'll ban menstrual pads....oh wait, they don't need to since those require undies.

Brownback is a train wreck.

These laws are nothing more that a codfied message to those down on their luck and in need of assistance .The message is that you are less than and that you have little to no value as citizens .

Hmm. . . are bras and panties lingerie or underclothes? I know that I have never considered my basic everyday bras and panties to be "lingerie."

bounty44 -> RE: Kansans can't spend cash assistance on bras or undies (4/17/2015 2:12:36 PM)

i would not consider bras and panties as "lingerie" either and I suspect the mean evil train wreck republicans who hate the poor might not either.

slvemike4u -> RE: Kansans can't spend cash assistance on bras or undies (4/17/2015 3:04:48 PM)

Am I to understand that you(Aylee and Bounty) think it's a good idea for the state to consider whether a woman's underwear is simply functional garments or titillating lingerie ?
What sort of guidelines to make these determinations will Brownback draw up ?
Will there be plastic cards cashiers can hold the garment up against and deduce what they be ?

bounty44 -> RE: Kansans can't spend cash assistance on bras or undies (4/17/2015 3:33:52 PM)

i think so long as the state is giving money to people for "necessities" then yes, they need to make a distinction between what is a "necessity" and what is not.

I take "lingerie" in this case to mean other than bras or panties, even if the latter have a purposeful erotic appeal/style to them. so I am understanding "lingerie" to mean teddies, nightgowns, etc.

how that gets handled at the register? beats me...

on another hand---this is all speculation, I think we don't really know how the law is defining lingerie. so itd be helpful to have that done first.

maybe it really is bras and panties---in which case, id be curious to hear the state's thinking before I vilified them.

I believe they banned purchases in lingerie stores. Victoria's Secret, etc. It doesn't look like they banned bras and panties.

From the bill:

quote:

No TANF cash assistance shall be used to purchase alcohol, cigarettes, tobacco products, lottery tickets, concert tickets, professional or collegiate sporting event tickets or tickets for other entertainment events intended for the general public or sexually oriented adult materials. NoTANF cash assistance shall be used in any retail liquor store, casino, gaming establishment, jewelry store, tattoo parlor, massage parlor, body piercing parlor, spa, nail salon, lingerie shop, tobacco paraphernalia store, vapor cigarette store, psychic or fortune telling business, bail bond company, video arcade, movie theater, swimming pool, cruise ship, theme park, dog or horse racing facility, parimutuel facility, or sexually oriented business or any retail establishment which provides adult-oriented entertainment in which performers disrobe or perform in an unclothed state for entertainment, or in any business or retail establishment where minors under age 18 are not permitted. TANF cash assistance transactions for cash withdrawals from automated teller machines shall be limited to $25, per transaction and to one transaction per day. No TANF cash assistance shall be used for purchases at points of sale outside the state of Kansas

What about jock straps and boxers ? [8D]

Sanity -> RE: Kansans can't spend cash assistance on bras or undies (4/17/2015 4:02:08 PM)

Yahoo news and AP are both tilted way to the left, so its not surprising that they lied in their news article

From defiantbadgirls story:

quote:

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A new Kansas law tells poor families that they can't use cash assistance from the state to attend concerts, get tattoos, see a psychic or buy lingerie. The list of don'ts runs to several dozen items.

Goes to show, it pays to be very cynical regarding sources while trying to stay current with the news. Everybody has an agenda, whether they realize it or not.

That is what I was thinking, another case of hyperbole twisting reality to create an illusion that does not survive in the light.

yes but the republicans are still mean evil train wrecks who hate the poor!

That is the reason for the illusion.

You don't think this comes under the heading of unenforceable....and therefore silly ?

CreativeDominant -> RE: Kansans can't spend cash assistance on bras or undies (4/17/2015 7:02:54 PM)

Why is it unenforceable? If they're wanting to pay with their "Benefits Card", they're told "no". If they want to save up a few days cash benefits ($ 25.00 from ARMs) and go without other stuff so they can buy from Victoria's Secret, that's their "poor" choice.

slvemike4u -> RE: Kansans can't spend cash assistance on bras or undies (4/17/2015 7:07:03 PM)

They are unenforceable because lingerie is sold in lots of places, right next to functional underwear too ....so how do you enforce it

I'm pretty sure a salesperson can distinguish between pretty lingerie and functional underwear.

Bras and undies from WalMart, good to go.

Bras and undies from a sex toy shop, not so good.

slvemike4u -> RE: Kansans can't spend cash assistance on bras or undies (4/17/2015 7:19:55 PM)

So now you ave cashiers deciding whether or not an item is sufficiently chaste enough ?

Lol,yeah I can see that working ,lol

slvemike4u -> RE: Kansans can't spend cash assistance on bras or undies (4/17/2015 7:21:19 PM)

Maybe the items can be clearly tagged in some manner....so the poor woman know they won't get turned away at the cash register. [8|]

This is just a guess, but I'll have at it. It seems reasonable enough.

"Lingerie shop" is probably defined as such because a certain percentage of their profit comes from intimate apparel. Or something along those lines. Then, like any other entity that can't accept this payment method for certain items, they refuse. Otherwise, I would imagine they'd be fined.
