PeonForHer -> Adverts, adverts, everywhere! (4/20/2015 10:46:28 AM)

Has anybody else suddenly started suffering tonnes of pop up adverts when clicking on links here on the CM forums? Really weird. This wasn't happening this morning. It was difficult enough even to post this thread without getting lost in pop ups.

littleladybug -> RE: Adverts, adverts, everywhere! (4/20/2015 10:49:12 AM)

Nope. Got Ad Block Plus installed though.

PeonForHer -> RE: Adverts, adverts, everywhere! (4/20/2015 10:54:58 AM)

I've just reactivated that for the forums. It's not doing any good, though.

... Damnit, I've tried posting this three times - each time, the 'OK' button has given me a 'Meet Cretins for Sex in Your Area' website.

Oh dear. Crapware search on my own PC for me, it seems.

nope.. using the tor browser (to get around internet/isp restrictions)..

MariaB -> RE: Adverts, adverts, everywhere! (4/20/2015 11:46:05 AM)

Wow no I don't.

Spybot Search and Destroy, and Malwarebytes are the ones I would suggest to you to use.

Also, use Trend's Housecall Free online virus scan. There are others, but I have used Trend's scan a lot.

Or, heaven forbid, less online porn.

Jus sayin

I've done Malwarebytes; now running a Spybot scan.

I checked Firefox's 'add-ons' and found two obvious bits of crapware. This is how it works these days: they'll install something at a level that looks 'kosher' because it's user-level and not buried deep or secretly. The trick is, it's a setting that the user either doesn't know about or never looks at. Crafty.

Hey, I'm not going to endanger my very soul itself just to get rid of a bit of nasty software. Get real, ET!

You're so adorkable, I just love you.

PeonForHer -> RE: Adverts, adverts, everywhere! (4/20/2015 1:04:56 PM)

Actually, my suspicion was that it wasn't a nasty buried in one of the rich array of porn sites that I've inadvertently ended up on when researching ancient mystical texts and stuff, but a dodgy subtitles file. My old man spent £1,800 on a pair of hearing aids that he won't use because he says they're 'uncomfortable'. This was a result.

There's porn online? Where?

It would make a nice change from all the cats.

Excellent.

God, those damned cats.

Update: the problem seems to have gone. Neither Malwarebytes nor Spybot found anything; I'm pretty sure, now, that it was a sneakily installed browser 'add-on'. All the browsers have these and most of the add-ons are great - ad-blocker is one, for instance - but these two were garbage. For anyone who's interested - you have to get into your browser's settings and look at the add-ons. Google the name of the add-on in question to see if it's reputable. Mind you, some of them - as did mine - will look like crap on sight.

ResidentSadist -> RE: Adverts, adverts, everywhere! (4/20/2015 9:08:56 PM)

Sound like malware for sure. Just do a roll back and pick a recovery date prior to the pop ups.

[ETA: for those that might not know it's:

control panel / system and security / system / system properties / system protection - choose "system restore" and pick a date and time. Cures malware and most simple viruses.
