There's a quote that I can't quite remember .....about doing battle with monsters and be wary that you don't turn into one.

That's my only point here.....my humanity will survive their atrocities.

That's important to me...not so much to others ,but that's alright.

Are you referring to Sun Tzu: "Choose your enemies well, for you will come to resemble them."

Or Friedrich Nietzsche: "He who who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."

You assumed that Mike supported ISIS or the Taliban because of his pacifism. I assumed you beat your wife. Ya see how that works? It is one of those fallacy thingies.

Im real surprised Butch.....It shocks me that you don't feel we currently hold the higher moral ground when compared to the scum of ISIS and Al Queda
Really shocked

Better each other than us don't you think? I will admit it...I am a vengeful person and I would laugh and point and crap on their graves after a pork chop meal if they killed each other...but...I would pray for forgiveness and for God to had mercy on their souls.

I do dislike the hate that burns in me at times and I do fight it but i am at least honest and up front about it.

No Mike I am ashamed of our actions...before Bush and his torture goons I felt we were better... now I have lost trust in our moral superiority. I see little difference in cutting heads off and torture... how about you?

Actually I was pickin on Mike cause of his pacifism and I truly wonder if he'd feel the same way if one of those beheaded was his son. Would he stand by his convictions then? I think not but then that's just a guess since I know Mike not at all

It was Nietzsche I was thinking of....thanks

And that right there is my only point here....I have no love for the monsters of either organization, but I do love the idea of us as an exceptional country.

What happens say when CNN can broadcast footage of demonstrations in Washington Square Park where everyday Americans chant blood oaths at our enemies. Wishing death and mayhem ,not a pretty picture right ?

No ,one wishes to see that, right ?

So why come to a message board beating your chest over the thought of two more groups in this world going at each other

It's just one step closer to a street demonstration,no ?

That is not a fair comparison.

If Mohammed Jihadi Kaboom kills Mohammed Kaboom Jihadi in Eastfuckistan, neither are a member of his tribe. So. . . it really has no effect on him.

If Mohammed Jihadi Kaboom leaves Westfuckistan and beheads his son, THEN you have his tribe involved and it WILL have an effect. Of course he will feel differently. Now. . . will he still be a pacifist? No one knows.

Well that's that right there too

I remember when that shit was being tossed around washington.I remeber coming here and screaming I didn't want my country,my exceptional country,to codify torture.
But the bastards went and did it anyway didn't they ?

I'm now supposed to,as a result of that, expect less of my country, ask less of it.

Fuck that,I still hold the same ideals I held when it was water boarding being discussed.

I didn't like that and I see no reason to do an Irish jig over this shit either

Just to be clear,I'm not a pacifist.....I just draw the line at being bloodthirsty.

Well, technically, with the latter, the victim is alive when the "festivities" are ended (although some might argue that the victim is better off, dead?).

Now is that really the attitude you want all of your fellow citizens walking around with.

If so,why aren't we all taking to the streets and printing up placards ?

Perhaps we can get some audio equipment, some loudspeakers and get some chants going.

We can show the bastards who's who.

We'll show them bastards

Even though I got no love for the parties involved.....I still find it unseemly to celebrate death, violence and war.

I feel we hold the moral high ground and see no reason to squander that advantage.

If others choose to put their humanity aside there's not much I can do about it,but keeping silent has never been my strong suit

Who are you talking about? Who is celebrating death, violence, and war? And over who, precisely, do you imagine yourself to hold the moral high ground? Any time the planet's violent lunatics turn to killing each other instead of everybody else, it is a net gain for humanity. Not as good as them all singing Kumbaya, but a definite plus. There is no celebration of death and violence in that. You're feverish.

Well first Mike I do believe we are in a war...and in a war the ONLY way to win is to kill your enemy... that is survival not bloodthirsty. Dead is dead and it makes no difference if I celebrate it and you don't... it is all the same to the dead... So unless you are a pacifist that wants men to fight your wars for you then you should get off the high horse because you are no better than them.

Butch

I'm just curious Mike... how did you feel when Bin Laden was killed? Did you celebrate... did you say YEA to yourself? I will bet you did and this news is no different... Did you berate others for celebrating his death? I sure don't remember that if you did... but I could be wrong. Otherwise why now? what is different?
