Instant fail right in the second paragraph: " ... calls of racism and unequal treatment in the era of Obama ... " Blaming Obama for the simple fact that cops are finally being caught carrying out summary executions in the streets is nothing more than political nonsense. Especially when you factor in that the militarization of the police began under the aegis of the Patriot Act.

Actually you make an enlightening point. Here is what the era of Obama referenced:

"For all the talk of how Baltimore has been ignored by all levels of government, consider that the city received $1.8 billion from President Obama’s stimulus package—including $467.1 million in education funding and $26.5 million in crime prevention. Something else is at play here."

Yet you see it as a reference to blaming Obama. You're actual point is valid and agrees with the article. As long as those on the left want to see everything as political victimhood, nothing will get discussed and fixed.

Actually, I see the bolded part as ironic. Here we have the first American President of color, a step towards racial equality that cannot be overstated, and yet so many of the problems of the inner cities still continue. There is something entirely different than racism happening, Especially when you look at the officers charged in connection with Freddie Gray's death.

In some ways this comports with Kana's posts that are now missing after the thread got yanked.

According to Simon, the drug war lowered policing from the higher art of investigation / serve and protect to occupation, harassment, crime stat stuffing, and a total bypass of probable cause. What he describes also mirrors the revenue collection tactics we saw in Ferguson.

I can't say I heard anything like this commentary in the national TV news or in other print sources that I read.

Things are heating up in the Freddy Gray Case:

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/crime/blog/bs-md-ci-freddie-gray-prosecutors-respond-20150519-story.html#navtype=outfit&page=1

It is a new perspective to see a prosecutor being aggressive against police officers.

bounty44 -> RE: David Simon on Baltimore Policing (5/20/2015 4:54:46 AM)

from what I can tell, the prosecutor is self-aggrandizing and has overstepped her bounds in a handful of ways that has damaged what people think of her legal acumen, her ability to prosecute the case, and what's more, has served to set the stage for even more violence down the road.

cloudboy -> RE: David Simon on Baltimore Policing (5/20/2015 8:34:10 AM)

Well, according to this article, it's completely spurious that the victim was carrying a "switchblade" or illegal knife. Next, although the knife was alleged as reason for probable cause, the Police never knew he had it when they arrested him. The prosecutor, instead of making excuses for this, is actually holding them accountable as liars.

The subplot is, can you weed out bad policemen without compromising the police as a whole?

bounty44 -> RE: David Simon on Baltimore Policing (5/20/2015 9:20:13 AM)

my understanding was they arrested him because he was a known criminal, in an area where criminal activity frequently occurred, and he ran from the police.

I could be wrong on this, but im not aware of the cops saying they initially apprehended/arrested him because of a knife.

exactly what lie did the arresting officers engage in?

cloudboy -> RE: David Simon on Baltimore Policing (5/21/2015 8:53:17 AM)

The police are having continuing problems in BALTO:

We have to send in multiple units just to do basic police work, which says we have to work on community engagement.
- Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony W. Batts

>Officers tell me and their supervisors, any time they pull up to respond to a call, they have 30 to 50 people surrounding them," Batts said. "We have to send in multiple units just to do basic police work, which says we have to work on community engagement.

The comments were Batts' first on the state of his embattled agency and the surge in shootings and homicides that began about the time Gray was arrested and fatally injured.

Batts said police are trying to investigate killings in West Baltimore, but have been slowed by the large crowds that often surround them.

It makes it very difficult to follow up on violence that takes place there," he said. "Clearly, they're not holding back. They're getting to those locations and getting surrounded. You have many citizens with hand-held cameras that they're sticking in the faces of officers, an inch off the officer's face."

Batts said police do not want to cause a "bigger issue" by sending in backup, but they want to "make sure the officers are safe and citizens are safe.<

Thanks for the updates cloudboy

So, all of the hate spew (its probably safe to call it leftist hate spew, with all things considered) has only bought Baltimore a considerable spike in violent crimes, and made the work of trying to make Baltimore safer extremely problematic

The situation needs more gasoline, right

bounty44 -> RE: David Simon on Baltimore Policing (5/21/2015 11:25:48 AM)

im still wondering what "lies" (if any) by the arresting officers...

Unless he pulled it while resisting arrest.
When the police apprehend someone one of the first things they do is make sure they are unarmed.
Do you see something sinister in that?

cloudboy -> RE: David Simon on Baltimore Policing (5/21/2015 2:06:53 PM)

Only when you look for probable cause in hindsight, as in this case. The prosecutor has called the knife-claim spurious.

He ran, they stopped him, of course they checked for weapons. I see you still only pay attention to left wing sites or you would know that while a spring assisted knife is not illegal in MD, it is in Balt. Thought you lived near there.

bounty44 -> RE: David Simon on Baltimore Policing (5/22/2015 5:02:14 AM)

should I keep asking for what "lies" the police officers engaged in, or give that up?

cloudboy -> RE: David Simon on Baltimore Policing (5/22/2015 6:32:44 AM)

THE BALTO SUN is the local paper reporting the news. Get a grip.

As I see it the officers made an illegal stop, without probably cause -- so the fruits of the illegal stop (the knife) get tossed out and cannot be used to justify an illegal arrest. Next, the officers are claiming the knife is illegal, which seems spurious and an invention to jimmie-up probable cause when there is none.

---

The six police officers have been indicted.

bounty44 -> RE: David Simon on Baltimore Policing (5/22/2015 8:04:10 AM)

help me out---a known criminal, in a crime area, isn't cause for a "stop?" and subsequently running from the police isn't cause for an arrest?

the knife is illegal; thats been pointed out to you. why do you insist otherwise?

and I still don't see any lies.

cloudboy -> RE: David Simon on Baltimore Policing (5/24/2015 7:33:58 PM)

Another two people were shot, one of them fatally, in separate incidents on Sunday among at least 18 shootings over Memorial Day weekend, during a particularly alarming spate of gun violence.

Thirty-three people have been killed so far in May, the first time the city has had 30 homicides in a month since June 2007. No month in the last 15 years has had more than 33 killings.
