In his excellent book The Patient Will See You Now Dr. Eric Topol
makes some predictions about the future of healthcare. Dr. Topol is
among his other accomplishments the Editor-In-Chief of Medscape.

The basic thesis of the book is that the information now available to the
patient will break down the old "paternal" doctor down culture of medicine.
He especially focuses on the smartphone. One of his predictions being
virtual doctor visits via smartphone. It is now happening. This from NPR:

The Doctor Will Video Chat With You Now

The book is thoughtful and has a lot of other information in it.
I recommend the book in the E version since it is about 300 pages with
about 50 pages of footnotes, many of which are URLs.

I know for fact that it is closer than you think. At this time I cannot divulge the proprietary confidential details but it is actually something I am working on at my job. I may be able to tell more in a month or two from now.

A virtual doctor would work for me much of the time. I have some chronic problems. When they flare up the doctor gives me a prescription for the same medications he's given me for 10 years. Rather than an office visit it would be so much cheaper and faster to use a virtual doctor to get the meds.

In Colorado, many doctors found it lucrative to prescribe MMJ for patients (after medical was legalized but not yet recreational marijuana). Some doctors were meeting with patients over skype and prescribing, and there was some indignation about it.

Like peppermint, I see the doctor for pre-existing problems. He doesn't really need to see me, he just needs me to go get the blood work done.

The Doctors tv show promotes a doc by smartphone service. I'm not remembering what the app is called. But look at The Doctors website. Likely you'll find it there
