Jack is looking at Anne, but Anne is looking at George. Jack is married, but George is not. Is a married person looking at an unmarried person?

WinsomeDefiance -> RE: Jack is looking at Anne.... (5/4/2015 9:12:16 AM)

Yes.

igor2003 -> RE: Jack is looking at Anne.... (5/4/2015 9:51:26 AM)

I don't see anything in the original statement that would indicate whether Anne is married or not.

usememistress775 -> RE: Jack is looking at Anne.... (5/4/2015 10:14:17 AM)

By the transitive property, If Jack is looking at Anne he is also looking at whoever Anne is looking at. Therefore Jack is also looking at George

@Igor2003,
Make an assumption as to what Anne's marital status may be. Then re-examine the question. Is your answer the same?

@Usermemistress775,
Assume each person can only look at one person. Is your answer the same?

Thanks Kirata! You gave me "mini eureka"[:D]

Huh? Sounds like a load of BS. Just because I look at someone does not mean I am automatically looking at anyone else. Therefore, Jack isn't necessarily or automatically looking at anyone but Anne.

My answer is absolutely the same. I can assume the moon is made of sparkling fairy dust. That has absolutely no bearing on what it actually is. You know what they say about "assume". I could "assume" one of two things about Her marital status. I could either assume she is, or assume she isn't. Neither assumption changes the fact that NOTHING in the original statement indicated whether Anne was married or not. Therefor, my answer was "it can't be determined", and no amount of assumptions can change that.

ARIES83 -> RE: Jack is looking at Anne.... (5/4/2015 11:48:31 AM)

Try not to think of the assumption being the answer. Try examining the problem with an assumption as to her status in mind, how does she fit into the problem in relation to the others when you change your assumption of her status?

It doesn't matter if Anne is married or unmarried. If she's unmarried, A married man is looking at her. If she's married, she is a married individual looking at an unmarried person. Either option satisfies the equation in the affirmative.

What do you think brings you to that conclusion?

Remember what happens when you assume.
