I was just toying a round with an idea for making better home made rubber toys.  PlastiDip is found at dedicated hardware stores, and goes well on wood and metal to rubberize it.  My  father has some tools that were "dipped" over 30 years and the material is still soft and protective.  I believe it is non-toxic but at the time I cannot recall.  Obviously this would be good for preserving any floger handles or crops, but I was wondering if it might be safe for other aplications.

Specifically could I dip a metal ring gag to make some bite protection to prevent chipped teeth and rubberise the part where it comes in contact with the lips. Could I dip a base dowel and wooden ball that have been fastened together to hide the seams and impove the look on a better sort of gag.

If anyone has ever used plastiDip did it work?  Is it unsafe to use? If it is unsafe is there any other sort of product that might work?

Thanks in advance,
Me

From everything I've ever read, Plasti-Dip is extremely toxic.  When I looked for some at a Home Depot, I was told that they didn't carry it for exactly that reason.  You should definitely not be using it on something that goes in someone's mouth.

I saw an interesting alternative once: pellets of modelling plastic. Boiling water, apparently, is sufficient heat to give them a putty-like pliability.  I don't recall if they were non-toxic; they were in a 'surplus' bin, and the next time I went to that store they were all gone.  I don't know where to get them.

Plasti-Dip is only toxic when liquid. After it cures it is just rubber. All rubber of all types use toxic chems to make them plyable. There are BD SM companies that use it for gags, I will see if I can find the links to them. I have ball gags I made over ten years ago.....my slave is still biting on them with no ill effects. You can use it for many bondage toys, have fun..

PlastiDip needs to dry and 'cure' so that the solvents can disperse. Even if it feels dry to the touch it may still contain the toxic solvents. Coated items need to be in an airy location for 2-3 weeks. Sniff the dried plastic and if it no longer smells of MEK (MethelEthelKetone) then it's fairly well cured.

PlasticDip is one thing to be very careful with in it's liquid state. EXTREMELY FLAMABLE and the MEK and the hydrocarbons are cumulative poisons and build up in your body and could eventually cause connective tissue and cognative disorders.

The MSD for PlastiDip: http://plastidip.com/consumer/msds/plastidip.pdf

As to coating a metal ring? It can be done but this will not totally prevent tooth damage. It will reduce the chances of chipping a tooth though. One good thing about PlasticDip is that it does make it easy to sanitize the coated parts.

It's called "polymorph" in the UK and "friendly plastic"  I believe in the US a google search should turn a local supplier. Marvelous stuff bought a couple of tubs last year,  Non Toxic and if I recall correctly may even be bio degradeable.

So in short PlastiDip works fine if you follow the instructions.Yippy.  Have also been trying to hunt down some friendly plastic but I can't seem to find any major retailors that carry it, in south eastern Idaho.  Now to pick if I if i want red, yellow or black... wait a minute that is a silly question.

Plastidip is toxic when it is liquid, but when it dries is it quite stable...

One thing you should keep in mind is silicone probably one of the most genius materials to use in toys, especially insert-able toys. it is non toxic, also hypoallergenic. It can also be sterilized by boiling it in water, soaking it in bleach and most times, it is dishwasher safe. wether making toys or buying them, it's definitely something to keep in mind!
