It is only trivial in comparison to the importance of defending rights we fought and died for.

Butch

It isnt trivial at all

It is a government entity casually stepping on someones' right, a school that is supposed to teach things like rights suppressing them

It is an outrage

kdsub -> RE: Flag Etiquette (5/19/2015 8:01:07 AM)

Agreed it is outrageous...but still trivial in comparison... now which however is the more important... that a child is denied, if only temporarily, the right to drive on a school parking lot with flags... or... the perceived denial of rights to black Americans...that i may add is having a lot larger impact on this nation then flag waving.

Butch

Yes it is trivial...I don't need to drive around with flags in the back of my truck to honor the death of my brother in war... I don't need to drive around with flags in my truck to honor my father...brothers... uncles...and cousins that fought in war... I certainly don't need to drive around with flags in my truck to honor my own service to my country.

Yes there are times for the flying of flags for those very honors but every day to school is not necessarily one of them and it IS trivial in comparison to the other image.

Butch

Well, maybe this kid does. People express their feelings in different ways.

Frankly I would be pissed as hell if you were to call some action of mine to honor my dead husband, "trivial" or "throwing a tantrum."

That black kid has every right that you do, Butch. He is taught that hate

That the schools are trending toward accommodating people

Apparantly a LOT of people

Who hate the United States (and you know the safety argument was a lie) is rather more important

Both are important. I am surprised that you are singing hosannas for the second photos freedom of expression but are quite willing to deny the first kid's freedom of expression and countenance school officials vandalizing his truck.

kdsub -> RE: Flag Etiquette (5/19/2015 8:16:13 AM)

Aylee I think I have expressed and explained my position which if you read my posts I am sure you would understand.. If you did you would see where your post has nothing to do with my position. If you can't understand what i am saying then i will just have to accept your opinion of me and my position regretfully.

My high school didn't do the pledge of allegiance all to often.

Finally you've said something everyone can believe.

That I could say the pledge at any time is a concept you really do not understand.

Good try on trying to attack/insult me. Better performance than Aylee. Unfortunately its still amateur hour....

I'm pretty sure we don't know what it means in your head.

kdsub -> RE: Flag Etiquette (5/19/2015 8:20:44 AM)

Sanity i just don't see schools as bastions of liberals out to overthrow the Constitution and deny good Americans their right to display patriotism.

It seems to me the situation with the school and flags was resolved quickly... now if we could only display as much outrage over the situation of African Americans in this country under the same flag.... It would be great to get it resolved just as quickly.

Nothing was resolved. The two photos represent the same issue to me, people dont assimilate. People living here are taught to hate this nation despite being a part of it, despite the rights (and privileges) they themselves enjoy which have been bought with blood sweat and tears of true patriots

Baltimore is the best recent example that we have of where all of this is heading

Meanwhile our president has effectively thrown the border wide open to floods of people, many of whom openly despise the United States, and we are importing legions from overseas, many whose first allegiance is and will always be to Islamic law

Nothing is resolved, far from it

kdsub -> RE: Flag Etiquette (5/19/2015 9:00:27 AM)

It does seem that with each generation beyond the last test of our national resolve to defend our rights... that what is special and important about our freedoms is lost to indifference and political divide.

To me the last real war of national resolve was WWII. It was the last war where there was a real threat to our existence...all wars since have not had that threat and that is why we quickly tire of our children dying and do not have the resolve to win.

These constant military actions have divided this nation... it is the divide rather than hate that i believe is the source of our difference of opinion of America and its future and what is patriotic and what is not.

So we do agree somewhat on the result... just not the reasons..

How about the flag that many of them died for you in the Iraq war.
Those blacks that died? They aren't the ones stomping on the flag. And you know what, Butch? Plenty of white people and brown people died in those wars, too.

quote:

How about the same flag their great grandparents received the whip to their backs for their labors.
Yes...their great-GREAT grandparents...certainly not them. A disgraceful time in our past...in many countries'past? Do you suppose they hate the black men who sold their ancestors into slavery with at least as much passion as they do the country today, which has not done slavery for 150 years? with the same passion as they do the white people whose ancestors fought to free them?

quote:

How about the same flag where they could not drink from the same water fountain as you and I.
Another shameful period from our history. But what about the folks who rallied under that flag...to end that? Those who stated that it wasn't right in our country and who changed the way our country...represented by that same flag...did things?

quote:

How about the same flag where they can't drive down the street in their own towns without being pulled over and searched.
Does this happen today? Sure does. Is it always lawful? Sure isn't. Is it done under some kind of law that allows it? Don't think do...generally, the cops that are engaging in this are breaking all kinds of rules BUT let's be honest...when you have a small segment of the population committing the majority of the crimes, theres going to be more attention focused on that segment.

quote:

How about the same flag where hard working African Americans were denied jobs and promotions because of their color.
How about that law pushed for...And passed...that no longer allows for that kind of action? That was done in this country...represented by that flag.

quote:

How about bitching about whites on welfare... whites using the ER's

Butch
Why don't you start a thread just like that, Butch? I'll be there...As will those defending the "downtrodden"...because, you know, everybody on welfare is there honestly.

I'm tired of always hearing about all of the bad done under that flag and none of the good.

Sanity -> RE: Flag Etiquette (5/19/2015 9:29:49 AM)

Its an all-volunteer military, Butch. Those who take us to war are elected representatives

Democrats and Republicans alike have beat the drums of war, including the Iraq war

Its something that is USED to foment hate, sure

Not exactly the heart of the matter though

OK Yogie... that would be a miracle....But I would bet my life that many blacks who did fight for this country agree wholeheartedly with that young man and his demonstration.

kdsub -> RE: Flag Etiquette (5/19/2015 9:31:39 AM)

Well I would hope it is... i would hate to think gay marriage is the reason for the divide.

Another wedge issue, used to foment hate. Hate the old folks who harbor traditional values...

kdsub -> RE: Flag Etiquette (5/19/2015 9:47:12 AM)

My mother was against gay marriage... I understood her and what generation she came from... I didn't hate her... it seems the hate is more a political thing than personal...this seems to be the case with a lot of issues. We feel differently on a political level than a personal one... I wonder why that is?

A real denial of rights, or a perceived one.
Respect for the flag, and by extension, the country or contempt for the flag, and by extension, the country.
And attempt to honor someone, or an attempt to shock them.

kdsub -> RE: Flag Etiquette (5/19/2015 9:55:43 AM)

I don't think it was meant to shock... I believe it was done in anger...I really don't think that black man gives a crap what you or I think about his demonstration...but whatever the reason it does not diminish the impact and seriousness of the situation the stomping on the flag represents.

Butch

Then there would be no point. It still displays hate and contempt for the nation.

kdsub -> RE: Flag Etiquette (5/19/2015 10:09:09 AM)

I guess they feel that way Bama...I think if millions of Americans feel that way, and we are talking millions, we should be looking for solutions. Don't you... instead of having a hissy fit over displaying a flag in a pickup truck.

If we spent one tenth the effort to guarantee that all Americans benefit from all the amendments to the Constitution as you and many others spend defending the 2nd amendment we would not be having this conversation.
