I have a general site question. I find a number of profiles that list a yahoo im username and ask to be contacted there. One person replied to a message with this (wasn't on their profile). Is yahoo really still that popular, or are these generally fake, scam, or otherwise "not worth pursuing" profiles?

Scams.
Because there's no good reason to only respond off this site when you have a personal ad here, except that they're going to be reported to this site and have their profile removed.

Taking out the possible TOS violations-- yahoo IM is something that can be monitored, even if someone is not actively on the site. Kinda makes sense to me, a total non-scammer.

Yahoo im.....get your wallet out. They will be asking for money or to join another website. But do not take my word for it, send them an im and find out yourself

An email address won't get your account deleted. It isn't that easy to fall into the abyss.

CollarSpace's craptacular chat features, as well as the always-on nature of outside chat features, plus increased smartphone usability, all make for valid reasons to communicate by some messenger. Every person I've met on here, I've communicated with by some messenger service first.

That said, the vast majority of those listing a yahoo address in their profile are, indeed, scammers.

Besides the obvious scam situation, which already was discussed, one problem with almost anything "Yahoo" is the blantant disregard for your privacy in reporting of your IP address to anyone who looks.

I haven't checked in a while, but, it used to be that Yahoo put your IP address in the clear in all your communications, so that the company or library or home that you were sitting at was as plain as day to the recipient.

So, yet another reason could be that LE and scammers alike might want to move you to any site that will report your originating IP address is to start the process of identifying you and/or tagging your communications.

Yahoo is one of the IM servers that lets you block easily and hard to trace. Most likely scammers but you never know.

Proceed with caution when a profile directs you offsite from the beginning. If the profile is otherwise fleshed out really well, talks about vanilla interests, etc, it might be worth a try, but honestly, as much as I hate the site design here, I'd much rather navigate it for awhile than give out information that'd allow someone to harass me offsite without giving me the chance to screen them. If someone's willing to take that risk, especially a woman, I'd be willing to bet they aren't who they say they are and/or are trying to scam you.
