Wayward5oul -> Philadelphia suggestions? (5/27/2015 3:18:43 PM)

Going to be spending a few days in Philly, Center City area, at the end of the month. Aside from the usual tourist-y things to do, anyone have any suggestions for best eats/things to see/do etc?

Thanks in advance-Wayward

Good Dog for food.
Or The Cantina for food.
There is lots of good food.

Reading terminal market is fun tourist and good eats.
Liberty bell I thought was fun.
I really like Eastern State Penitentiary.
Rittenhouse square if you have some nice weather is fun too.

There is a wonderful breakfast/lunch place called Green Eggs. Try to go during the week. During the weekends there is a line up the block. It is in Center City.

There are a lot of great places.

I am all about the food!

I will be staying in the Rittenhouse Square area so I will definitely be able to fit that in. I will be with a colleague who apparently thinks that I am a party planner or something and he keeps asking me 'what I have planned for us to do".

For sightseeing - I would take the Phlash Bus. It's a cheap easy way to see a lot of the city. Plus you can get on and off as much as you want.

http://www.visitphilly.com/tours/philadelphia/phlash/

South Street in the evenings is always interesting people watching. (From Front Street to about 10th street)

Christ Church - Benjamin Franklin is buried there

Liberty Bell - Usually very crowded

Mutter Museum if you like weird medical things

I can't think of the name of it, but on South Street around 4th street is a little Sushi Bar that is fabulous

Haven't been to it, but have heard a great place for brunch is Supper

For cheesesteaks - I suggest Jim's also on South Street (I'm sorry Pat's and Gino's are too touristy for me)

If you like to cook there is a great kitchen supply store in the Italian Market called Fante's Looks small from the outside, but trust me, it's huge.

I will definitely be doing people watching. I think thats my favorite pasttime!

I won't be doing any cooking...it is a working vacation for me, and part of vacation is trying the local cuisine. But I do like checking out cool markets and taking stuff home to try.

You could beat up Rocky. That's what I would do. I mean, really, how many people go to Philly and not have "Beat up Rocky" on the to do list?

I told someone the other day that I was going to do the Rocky thing, bouncing on the steps by the statue and all, just cuz I can. They had no clue what I was talking about.

So apparently there are a few who don't have that on their bucket list. But they must be from another planet.

23rd and Pine: Fitler Square. (I'd love some pics of the interior of the park - when I was a child we lived at 404 S 23rd). But last I checked there was a great cafe at 23rd and Chestnut (word of mouth, haven't been, myself). 30th Street STation (train station) or Reading Market. South Street.
Oh, and if you could send me a pic of the Goat in RIttenhouse Square, it would make me smile bigly :) )
(I have a big envy....)

I once won an all-expense-paid weekend trip to Philthadelphia. Have you ever been to Philly? That's like punishment for winning.

Cheesesteaks: No doubt about it "Little Pete's" on Rt. 73 near the old prison. He's only open from 1000 until 1400 (He makes that much money because his food is that good).

I like to go down to Center City and just poke around. There are some non-touristy things to do. I'm weird, though. I can get lost for hours in a good hat shop.

Avoid the whore houses at all cost. Those dens of sin will damn your soul eternally, particularly the one on 8th, tell them I sent you ;)

If I find my way there, I will take pics!

It is the largest collection of Rodin's sculpture outside Paris. To me
everything else in Philadelphia would be second, at best.

I'm not really that much into hats, but I am keeping an eye out for some non-touristy things.

Hon....get on the tours....they signed the Declaration of Independence in Philly....go see Independence Hall....it'll floor you. It's intact, clean and, it'll blow you away. The whole place is about the size of a fucking dishrag. It's amazing that everything we learned, happened in that space.

The Liberty Bell (which by the way, is not the actual Liberty Bell....it's a replica....the original was removed years ago when some psycho decided to take a big fucking hammer to it) is entirely.....absolutely....not even remotely interesting.

If you do go....here's what you'll see: A bell....that's cracked....with a plaque. It's a cracked bell.

That's it.....a cracked big giant piece of metal.

Next.

And on the tours...make sure to ask why those black angled plate things are on houses about 12 feet or so off the ground by the front doors. I ain't gonna tell you why but....fascinating stuff.

Then make sure you go to Philly's Berkley....it's crazy. Take some money with you and be prepared to ship shit home.

Philly's a great town and.....go down any street (doesn't matter which one....some are better, some are worse but NONE SUCK like the ones in Times Square and.....order a REAL Philly Cheese sandwich. Pull over the horse carriage and ask someone where the best one is....there's about 100 that are good (again....NONE are in NY!).....go to (ANY) one of those and you'll have a great sandwich.

Other than that....get down to the river...it's gorgeous.

I used to be something of a history buff, and this kind of crap pisses me off if I waste time and effort to go see it and learn its not even authentic. Thank you.

I fully intend to avail myself of some of the local sammiches.

I'm probably too late for your trip now....but if you ever want to see some interesting art....Philly is loaded with it, and not just in the museums. There's a big thing called the Mural Arts Program that was started originally as a way to clean up graffitti. They commissioned artists to paint murals on buildings all over the city. You certainly can just pick them out on your own as you walk around town, but they also have some great tours.

Mural Arts Tours

I went on the "Love Letters" tour....was REALLY cool. I've seen these murals so many times before and now it's neat knowing the story behind them.
