I want to start writing more and in pursuit of that I want to buy my first ever laptop so I can write while away from home.

The primary purpose of this laptop would be for writing and downloading what I wrote in thumbnail drives for back up and transfer.

I am not really interested in connecting it to the internet.

Cost IS a factor - the cheaper the better (so long as quality isn't adversely affected.

Any recommendations?

Thanks, all . . .

i bought a netbook for that sort of purpose. I keep it very lean - little software - and it does the job. The keyboard is apparently 90% the size of a full keyboard; that once bothered me but it was easy to plug in a roll-up keyboard. I don't use it now - it wasn't a problem to adapt. Since everyone wants tablets these days, netbooks are slightly out of fashion so seem to be dropping in price.

I just got myself an 11 inch touch screen lappy from asus, brilliant for what I need it for, but like Peon, i dont like the keyboard(but im like that with laptops anyway)
I use it just for work, my tablet is for play(10 inch)
I think I paid 250 for it from tigerdirect
Only 500gig hard drive, but i have ample space on portable backup

Thanks for the info folks. I'm going to take a little more time to think about it. I'm still not sure I want to spend the money on it.

I got a Nextbook 2 in 1. It's a small laptop computer (10.5 inch screen) but it separates from the keyboard to be a touch screen tablet. It works using Windows 8.1. The keyboard is smaller than many are used to but I got used to it pretty quickly. I've had mine for 6 months and love it. One negative is that it's a bit heavy for its size. I also had to buy (on Amazon as no one sells it in a store) a micro USB male to full sized USB female adapter so that I could use a mouse with it as it only has a micro USB port.

Best part of it was the price. It's $179 at Walmart. If your store doesn't have it in stock you can order it online which is what I did and then picked it up at the store.

Revise that number. Just got 14 new chicks and 5 turkeys.

I have no idea the difference between laptops and netbooks. The name of my computer is Nextbook. I assume that is the manufacturer.

most netbooks I have seen are about the size of a tablet. Dell has a 14 inch, 32 gig hard drive, 2 gig memory, free upgrade to windows 10. They do monthly installments, and this can be yours for as low as $20 a month. Reg price $299.99, on sale for $199.99US. spend $20 more and you can get 500gig memory. No software is included in these prices.

Remember that you get what you pay for Marc.

I hardly ever use my laptop any more. It sits gathering dust. I picked up a wireless bluetooth keyboard really cheap and use it with my iPhone 6 plus when I want to write. I've used net books and they didn't last very long and the keyboards took a lot of getting used to.
HSN and QVC have deals on them quite often and let you do monthly payments. They are a little bit more expensive than buying from a large retail but not by much and the monthly payments are reasonable.

I just realized that saying, "wireless bluetooth," was a bit redundant. Oops

hi there Marc2b,

glad to know that you are writing again .. let me get to the point.
since you live in NY, that said you have easy access to more than us who live in Europe.

try to go to dell.com/us & see what you can find there, yesterday I did bought one for my neighbor here in the Netherlands for 329 euros " I don't know how much that in dollars"
but it was worth 500 in the same other brands who sell in Europe.

it was :
- core i3 1.7 4th generation.
- 4gb of ram.
- 500 gb of hard disck.
- 15.6 inch secreen "regular .. not touch screen I hate touch screens on a laptop".
- all the other stuff like wifi-bleutooth-cam... etc.

the price is what is more nice comparing to shitty HP in Europe & Lenovo ... etc ..
I am more of Dell fan, I can look something up for you .. just need to know your budget here ..
ETA: its more cheaper in the us website .. holy moly its only 299 $ .. let me send you a link here ..
http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-15-3551-laptop/pd?ref=PD_OC

regards

If you need a word processing platform, a used Panasonic Toughbook might be a good idea for you. They are durable, easy to repair (all is modular), and have a good mechanical keyboard.

I use two laptops. A toughbook CF-30 for work purposes and a bloody heavy desktop replacement for gaming.
