ORIGINAL: MythIncDragon I'd like to add my two cents to this thread. I personally see the 'Stars & Bars' as a symbol of hate and suppression, and it has been used that way since before the civil rights movements began in the 1960s. The KKK started using this flag as their symbol since their inception. However I see the flag has been used a symbol of rebellion and suppression. Many states in the south only started flying the flag, AFTER the civil rights act was signed into law as a symbol of their defiance. When people opposed the integration of schools they did so waving the stars and bars. Personal I do not see 'The Dukes of Hazard' as a racist show. I do not view the flag on the General Lee as a racist symbol either. In the show, it is a symbol of rebellion. That was the whole point of the show, the 'good ole boys'. The were outlaws in a sense, always being railroaded by an oppressive and racist local police force. Yes, I said racist. However, the DUKES were the ones that folks were the victim of this racism. They were hillbillies, and as such the outcasts. They did not belong. They were looked down on, almost as much as many minorities are today. The flag itself is only a symbol. It is how it's used that is important. The swastika for example, which was used by the Nazis as a symbol of their hate had been used by many cultures, for centuries as a universal symbol of life, and inclusion. When I see the swastika my impression of it's meaning depends on the context. I am not comparing the Swastika to the Stars & Bars. I am only giving an example of another symbol that has been misused. While I do not believe that this flag should be flown by any official government agency, I think that perhaps we have gone just a bit overboard. And this, coming from one of those crazy liberals. Just to clarify, this is the Stars and Bars: [image]http://www.usflag.org/historical/stars.bars.gif[/image] But the main controversy is over the Confederate Battle Flag, which is this: [image]http://www.usflag.org/historical/confed.battle.gif[/image] http://www.usflag.org/confederate.stars.and.bars.html
