It's all about symbols - and this confederate flag has become an embarrassing one to too many people, frankly. The powers that be know which way the wind's now blowing and aren't too happy about associating themselves with it any more. The symbol of a woman climbing up a flagpole to take it down, on the other hand ... within the space of just days it seems to have become a majorly powerful one.

I think it's also a matter of the kinds of people who have been rallying around it in recent decades. It's true that when "The Dukes of Hazzard" was on 36 years ago, the Confederate flag wasn't really that big of a deal. But since that time, a lot of extremists have taken it on as "their" symbol to the point that anyone who might display it for more "innocent" reasons (such as in "Dukes of Hazzard") would automatically be viewed questionably.

Owner59 -> RE: Dukes of Hazzard canceled due to being racist. (7/4/2015 12:01:34 PM)

Sure, that`s why you posted a made up quote and embarrassingly attribute it to Thomas Jefferson.

You lazy dupe.

I'd like to add my two cents to this thread. I personally see the 'Stars & Bars' as a symbol of hate and suppression, and it has been used that way since before the civil rights movements began in the 1960s. The KKK started using this flag as their symbol since their inception. However I see the flag has been used a symbol of rebellion and suppression. Many states in the south only started flying the flag, AFTER the civil rights act was signed into law as a symbol of their defiance. When people opposed the integration of schools they did so waving the stars and bars.

Personal I do not see 'The Dukes of Hazard' as a racist show. I do not view the flag on the General Lee as a racist symbol either. In the show, it is a symbol of rebellion. That was the whole point of the show, the 'good ole boys'. The were outlaws in a sense, always being railroaded by an oppressive and racist local police force. Yes, I said racist. However, the DUKES were the ones that folks were the victim of this racism. They were hillbillies, and as such the outcasts. They did not belong. They were looked down on, almost as much as many minorities are today.

The flag itself is only a symbol. It is how it's used that is important. The swastika for example, which was used by the Nazis as a symbol of their hate had been used by many cultures, for centuries as a universal symbol of life, and inclusion. When I see the swastika my impression of it's meaning depends on the context. I am not comparing the Swastika to the Stars & Bars. I am only giving an example of another symbol that has been misused. While I do not believe that this flag should be flown by any official government agency, I think that perhaps we have gone just a bit overboard. And this, coming from one of those crazy liberals.

There is a lot to be said about every point you`ve made.

IMHO,the most important question is, where do WE go from here?

I`m praying it will be to come together and make the best of it, together, in good faith.

Just to clarify, this is the Stars and Bars:

But the main controversy is over the Confederate Battle Flag, which is this:

But the true reality is that woman will be forgotten, deservedly so in a few weeks, where the flag will be around displayed even more prominently in the years to come. I just hope the discussion over the flag will bring change in a positive manner.

I remember in the not so distance past many here were all excited about the Occupy Wall Street movement. I predicted that in a short time the movement would be forgotten and fade into history as a footnote. Will that has come to pass as this will as well. Is Wall Street changed?... yea

The problem with these movements is they have no real unified goal let alone being able to point to concrete evidence to back their claims. What is needed is strong leadership with a list of valid grievances along with a reasonable plan to correct them.

I think there are some good people on the horizon with good ideas.... I was listening to a NAACP speaker this morning, sorry to say i did not get his name, who was addressing the perceived symbolism of the battle flag and how to move forward with a solution. He made sense!!!. First he said that he believed the real problem in America was NOT discrimination between blacks and whites but between have and have nots. I have been saying this for some time... There is no systematic discrimination in America but there is lasting poverty as a result of past discrimination. To me getting blacks to understand this and whites to understand they have some responsibility for this would be the first step in solving our problems. With this understanding we can start developing a plan without the false accusations of racism that will divide America and deflect our attention from the real problems.

I don't think so, Butch. From what I've seen on Facebook, the photos have already been turned into stylised art work. It's got some potent key elements beyond just that of the flag coming down: it's a woman doing it and a black woman at that; it looks like a woman pole-dancing, though with a fundamental difference ... it works, on quite a few different levels. In fact, I reckon various posters based on those photos will be on the walls of students' dorms pretty soon. No bad thing, as far as I'm concerned, because then you and I will get our wish: that discussion of that flag will help to bring change in a positive manner. That is, people will ask: what, exactly, did that flag stand for and why did people hold on to it so much? And then they may be able to move beyond vague waffle about 'Southern Values' and how, though the creator of the flag was an avowed white supremacist, said Southern Values had nothing to do with slavery.

kdsub -> RE: Dukes of Hazzard canceled due to being racist. (7/4/2015 1:18:45 PM)

Perhaps...but it is all just a waste of time and energy trying to assign a flag to something that does not exist while the real problems do not get addressed. That is why this will all be forgotten in a few months... because it is not real.

OMFG kdsub, If you really believe that by all means start a thread like:

The holocaust was a hoax and watch the shit storm, or
911 was an inside job and watch the shit storm, or
mexicans coming across the border and the increased murder and rape and watch the shit storm.

You will see those who discriminate against free speech come out in hordes just like the did to defend the gays by discriminating against the kliens religous rights.

None of these topics EVER get to the meat of the matter because people are so bigoted their ears refuse to even hear the evidence.

America is the prime example of bigotry and racism for the rest of the world from gubmint down.

kdsub -> RE: Dukes of Hazzard canceled due to being racist. (7/4/2015 1:31:57 PM)

That was a quote from the NAACP RealOne...and until you or anyone can show to me real systematic discrimination I am much more likely to believe this man than you.

I don't know, Butch. I've been somewhat shocked, as an outsider, by all this stuff. A lot of Brits I know have: we had no idea just how much rancour was still simmering about something we thought was part of history. It seems to me that there are unresolved issues down there in the south. Maybe all this business about the flag will help to focus all the talking about it.

kdsub -> RE: Dukes of Hazzard canceled due to being racist. (7/4/2015 1:43:06 PM)

In this we can agree.. but notice Peon when people call for frank and honest discussions of this and other issues how the one to start speaking earnestly and honestly is almost always shouted down as a racists.

Since I already did, give me an example of the elements you would accept as 'systematic discrimination'.

This whole politically correct thing is getting out of hand. Canceling shows and taking down flags, expecting Christians to bake cakes for gay couples. What happened to freedom of EVERYONE's speech?

Isn't it interesting how none of this mattered a while back. But companies are so afraid of what people will think, they cancel Miss America pageants because they don't like what a candidate says, won't sell a certain flag but they will sell an American flag made in China. Please.

If you don't like it, don't watch. If they won't bake a cake, go get a baker who will. I'm sure there are countless websites being developed right now for businesses who will handle everything for gay weddings. And that a good thing. But don't sue people because they have a morale viewpoint other than your own.

Be kind. Use wisdom. Stop being so offended.

I can see that. However, on the other side, while there's much talk of how 'political correctness has gone mad' and 'we're all sensible and balanced now' ... a bunch of harmless black people got shot to death by an avowed white racist. So, not surprisingly, there's a suspicion that there may still be something nasty, ugly and dangerous that quite urgently appears to need uncovering.
