Actually, it's a form of AA. TEXAS could simply take the top 20% of students from the state as a whole, and then those living in poor areas with disadvantages would be shut out.

It is still merit based, making allowances not only for poor districts, but for the fact that some districts pass out A's like they were going out of style.

Both relevant to what kind of students they may get while race tells you zip.

I believe the various, any, and all affirmative action programs of today can and should use economic standing and scholastic ability instead of race as the determining factor in applications for aid.

For the most part, those are the metrics, not race. There are still scholarship programs for blacks/minorities.

quote:

What should be the purpose of these programs today?.... Should it be to assure employment and education opportunities reflect the ethnic makeup of the area.... or... to help those that need it most regardless of racial makeup of the area?
I believe there was a time when racial or ethnic factors were needed to help minorities recover from past discrimination.... It has worked wonderfully and the makeup of the both white and blue collar work force reflects this. The overall wealth of many minorities has been increased greatly.

We agree that there was a time when AA programs were necessary. I truly believe AA programs based solely on race are no longer needed.

quote:

I also believe there is still work to be done in minority communities but the political and economic situation in America will force the end of affirmative action as it is used today...and it should. Now is the time to remove the racial requirement but instead of throwing an excellent program away I believe we should continue using economics... That is if America is willing to continue helping those less fortunate.
Government aid is a contentious subject in these poor economic times... I understand this. This means that any program we keep must serve a needed purpose that is temporary and efficient and will in the end produce more than it costs. Education is and will continue to be the key to a prosperous future. Not only will we benefit from this generation but educated prosperous parents have a much better chance of producing prosperous, or at least self sufficient children. In the long run this program will strengthen our tax base and lessen government dependant aid... What can be bad about this?
Yes it is not the end all catch all solution but it is a good step in that direction.
Butch

I agree with the bolded part, but, as we've already seen, most government aid programs are neither "temporary," nor "efficient." Many of the aid programs do more to continue the dependence. If we tag aid programs to, say, the bottom 25% of income earners, will there ever be a time when we don't have a "bottom 25% of income earners?" There will never ever be a time when there isn't poverty in the US. Even if the government handed out $100k to every man woman and child in the US every year, you and I both know cost of goods will rise accordingly and what it costs for a family of 4 to live (I think that's the metric for the poverty line) will rise accordingly.

I do think we need to help our fellow citizens who are not as fortunate as we are. I believe that's the Christian thing to do, too. I don't think Government is the best way to do that, though.

kdsub -> RE: Affirmative Action (7/6/2015 5:46:27 PM)

There is just no way education aid will continue dependence... of all the government programs those concerned with education have the biggest positive impact on the quality of life in this country. Why let the poor continue to raise more uneducated poor that are a burden on tax payers? Lets educate them so they can support themselves and contribute to the tax base and raise future tax payers... You think churches and private donations will do it? If that were the case there would be no need for government support in the first place.

So you believe that we should be satisfied with classes of income in the US? Because there will always be poor we should not try to reduce the number and increase the well being of our fellow citizens...harsh.

You and others keep saying the government should not aid the poor... the government is not the best way to do it... well my friend what is. It has not been there in the past so I don't see a change in the future.

Are you unaware that government aid and loans in higher education is what has CAUSED the higher education bubble? Once again, a government program has made things worse.

kdsub -> RE: Affirmative Action (7/6/2015 6:18:32 PM)

I do not buy that theory Aylee... basic facts show the more education the more income... there may be less demand for certain fields of education but even then those people are still making more money than their uneducated peers. As opportunities shift so will the subjects people major in... with time it always equals out.

No. They are defaulting on loans. Cannot buy houses. Putting off marriage. Putting off children. Living with their parents. Many of them cannot find jobs. And so on and so forth.

kdsub -> RE: Affirmative Action (7/6/2015 6:41:10 PM)

It is hard to pay the high cost of education... think we should do something about that?... Oh I forgot private donations and churches will take care of that.

Maybe we should shift a little attention from wars...and guns...and gay marriage to education.

Or states could require cutting the administration by 75%.

kdsub -> RE: Affirmative Action (7/6/2015 6:44:06 PM)

Sounds like a plan... try that in Missouri

kdsub -> RE: Affirmative Action (7/6/2015 6:48:29 PM)

On second thought that would not be worth the effort here... Our wise legislature, who believe big government is the bane of society, is in the mean time regulating the mandatory use of plastic bags in its cities... because the sponsor of the bill produces plastic bags in his factory....It is passing laws that prohibit cities from passing local laws such as minimum wage... what damn hypocrites.... so forget Missouri in your plan... they hate big government...except theirs.

Butch

Aylee -> RE: Affirmative Action (7/6/2015 7:03:42 PM)

Looky what Affirmative Action has done for us! Now people are lying about their ancestry because they know they will favored.
quote:

Just a few weeks after Rachel Dolezal transfixed the nation with her bogus claims to black heritage, yet another professor stands accused of falsely claiming a different racial identity to advance her career.

Andrea Smith, a professor of media and cultural studies at the University of California at Riverside, has started to draw attention in the wake of the Dolezal incident from those who say she has for years falsely claimed to have Cherokee blood. The case is arguably much more significant, though, because while Dolezal was a relatively undistinguished academic at Eastern Washington University, Smith is recognized as a significant scholar in her field. She routinely appears as a featured scholar at major events and has written books that were well-received by her colleagues (though others may question the broader worth of works like Conquest: Sexual Violence And American Indian Genocide).

Yes. How about merit. Crazy, I know. Radical even.

kdsub -> RE: Affirmative Action (7/6/2015 7:34:03 PM)

Again... you did not read my proposal... this is not a give away to just anyone... only those scholastically qualified... Believe me there are many poor young men women that are excellent students that could use the same amount and type of aid as was provided in affirmative action.

I believe that was the failing of the existing program besides race... unqualified students were enrolled where they did not have the proper scholastic background to succeed... Many did anyway but more qualified students were passed over.

Butch

kdsub -> RE: Affirmative Action (7/6/2015 7:36:47 PM)

Aylee you will loose a link war... there are too many facts that college pays even with student debt and college grads earn twice as much... EVEN with their student loan debt over their employment history.

And while that is true, the government programs have greatly contributed to the extreme increases in the cost of an education making more people unable to go to college without being dependent on the government. Dependence on the government is in and of it's self a bad thing, it kills independence and kills initiative.

Starting with the Department of Education which has created the need for much of that staff
