"Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said Tuesday that only 60 so-called "moderate" Syrian rebels were currently being trained by the U.S. in the $500 million program that had been slated to put 3,000 fighters into the field against ISIS by the end of this year.

Carter told the Senate Armed Services Committee that he regretted disclosing that the number was so low but "I wanted to tell the truth. The number 60, as you all recognize, is not an impressive number. The number is much smaller than we hoped for at this point."

Not much return on taxpayer monies in my opinion.

Sanity -> RE: Cost of doing business (7/8/2015 8:31:23 PM)

I hope that the presidents golf game is at least improving

KenDckey -> RE: Cost of doing business (7/8/2015 9:07:28 PM)

LOL yeah that damned innocent golf ball that he abuses with a steel/polysomething club will protect us LOL My game is shooting at defenseless engineer stakes at 100 meters. They can run if they choose. Most are idiots and just stick their pointy heads in the ground LOL

JVoV -> RE: Cost of doing business (7/8/2015 10:41:12 PM)

Surely there are reasons for the number being so low. Maybe it's our definition of 'moderate'?

tweakabelle -> RE: Cost of doing business (7/9/2015 3:01:06 AM)

A look at the history of Western support for the anti-Assad 'moderates' in Syria explains why Syrians are not too enthusiastic.

That history is one of broken promises, failure to support, and betrayal. Consequently groups such as the Free Syrian Army have been sidelined, and on occasion over run by salafi/jihadi groups. OTOH, salafi/jihadi groups such as the Nusra Front and IS, which are financed and armed by regional forces such as Saudi Arabia Turkey and Qatar*, are far better financed, trained, armed and equipped.

So most Syrians seeking Assad's overthrow gravitate towards the salafi/jihadi groups for obvious practical reasons, despite their misgivings about salafi/jihadi ideologies.

* All US allies ......

It depends. Are these 60 going to be cadre for the group to train? Remember, you have to train cadre BEFORE you can expand to train large amounts of troops. It is essentially a pyramid scheme.

Or it could be that no one is really that interested.

KenDckey -> RE: Cost of doing business (7/9/2015 1:00:20 PM)

I would say more like the latter based upon mistrust

Thus, $300M wasted. I take that back. Three or four years, and $299M wasted.

I'd like to know what that $300M was spent on.

War is a profit...period. OR...maybe we are training them to be nuclear physicists so we can soon fear the 'Syrian bomb' too.

Black Ops don't come cheap; unfortunately they have to place the cost 'here' and 'there' on the budget and hope no one questions it. Now it looks like the public is looking in an area the US Military really didn't want them looking. Which makes the politicians look like asses for discovering it; since they have to walk-back things. Unfortunately, the public, whom doesn't understand such things, demands a full accounting. Which the politicians can not do, because its classified. Now they can't say its classified, because then the question becomes "How do you know of this, without security clearances?". Which places them in even...MORE....trouble with the law.

I'm not saying that this is the case here....

KenDckey -> RE: Cost of doing business (7/10/2015 10:49:13 AM)

These are dedicated training dollars I believe, therefore not available for black ops
