Each Dragon tail is one piece of rolled leather. Its characteristics vary greatly depending on the hide used as much as the craftsman who made it. I have tested several dragon tails from the same craftsman and they can vary in feel depending on whether it was belly hide, edge or center. My best advice is not to order one online and go test some out at your local vendor.
I have 2 supposedly identical suede dragon tails . . . one likes to make a nice sharp crack and it is easy to find the sweet spot. The other one hates me, hates cracking, hates going where I throw it and just when I have rotated the handle enough times to find the sweet spot where it behaves . . . it will only behave 2 or 3 times before the sweet spot fades away. Basically, I have one black suede Dragon Tail and one wall decoration.
