A lot of this debate seems to revolve around the stateside legal position.
I can appreciate the problems, however, I believe the term "Prostitute " is weighted and mildly offensive and should be consigned to the dustbin of history.
A few personal opinions are scornful of men resenting paying for sex.
I would emphasize that those are purely opinions and don't reflect the true picture.

If payment is involved, then the use of the word is appropriate.

Involved isn't necessarily the correct adjective here, since, in California at least, payment for sexual activity is different, legally, from payment for something else, which only "incidentally" (eyes roll) involves sex.

1. California v. Freeman
2. Porn versus Prostitution
3. The legal line between porn and prostitution
etc.

It's not that payment "is" involved and that sexual activity "is" involved so much as it's that payment is "only" involved and that sexual activity is "only" involved.

I would say sex worker? yes.
Prostitute? No.

Hmm. So it looks to me as if you began this thread with something of an axe to grind. Which is ok by me, grind away.

You make some really really important points about prostitution, certainly many many young women are forced into prostitution through exploitation, trafficking, addiction and poverty (It's interesting to note that the most appalling examples you proposed were based on studies from places like S. Africa, Mexico, Thailand etc - all places where poverty is a massive issue). This is something that I believe, the rest of us should do something about. But I maintain that the answer is to look at ways of solving the problems (exploitation, trafficking, addiction and poverty) rather than simply attacking the symptoms (prostitution). In a very poor area, if you deny women the last bit of income they can earn, then how are you helping them (and their children?).

I am curious about the stats.... If you did a survey of street prostitutes in run-down areas you may get one set of facts, whereas if you surveyed the women who work for an exclusive high-end escort service I suspect you'd get quite a different set of data. I very much doubt that the studies you refer to include cam girls within their definition of "prostitute".

In any respect - There certainly are women who do sex work by choice. I know a couple who make a decent living from it, one of them paid for her college tuition by blowing (and sometimes spanking) silicon valley execs. She went in and out of sex work with every shred of her integrity and self-respect utterly intact.

To the OP...

No, they work in the sex industry. So "sex workers" is a sensible term, although I'd use the term "adult entertainer".

I happen not to like the term "prostitute" and while I wont get all flappy if someone uses it, I think it's derogatory.

So what if they are? Get over it. Unless they are trying to mislead you, what's the issue? If you have a problem with it, don't embibe.

I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT PRO-DOMME OR DOMINANT WOMEN WHO REQUIRE A TRIBUTE

There are so many webcam sites and the women will do almost any type of BDSM on webcam for money. Many will penetrate themselves with a dildo if you pay them. However, there is no physical contact and no intercourse.

Would you consider them prostitutes?

I don't understand the need some people have to label everyone.

TNDommeK -> RE: Do You Consider Webcam Women Prostitutes? (7/27/2015 11:33:43 AM)

I would have to agree ML, adult entertainer sounds better.
I would say a dancer is an entertainer, as well.

How is watching something on cam any different than watching a movie on television or on YouTube? You might pay to watch the person on cam but don't porn channels and porn websites charge money? Cam shows are nothing more than semi interactive movies. Since the interaction is only verbal I don't see how it's prostitution. Unless you consider phone sex prostitution. Then that would mean all verbal sexual talk is prostitution and so every time a driver in a car cut you off and you mouthed "fuck you" you could be arrested for solicitation.
