I'll give you my tried and true local favorites (Lafayette, Indiana).
*Lafayette Brewing Company
This place has the best fried food ever. Fried pickles, Scotch eggs, fish and chips, and their famous Piper's Pride Scottish Ale (named after our local Fife and Drum Corps) makes mouths happy.
*Cajun Connection
It's a weird place for cajun food, but the ladies who make it are from New Orleans and really know how to cook. Their gumbo is fantastic, as is the crawfish etouffee. Also, they are the only restaurant I've ever been to that makes their cornbread sweet enough for this girl's southern tastes. If you're in the mood for wine, they have a great selection, but I'd recommend going with a house wine. Their cajun red is great! It goes so well with the spicy food!
*Bea One
This place has the best pan-Asian cuisine in town. They have an awesome sushi chef. I'd recommend the Bea One roll (flash fried crab and other goodies) or the sashimi. Also, their two-person entrees are fantastic, and are really enough for three or four people. They mix up a good cocktail, too.
*South Street Smokehouse
All I have to say is RIBS. Really, really good ribs. Fantastic ribs. And they're very cheap. They have good cornbread, too, made from scratch. Their baked beans are to die for, as is their pulled pork. They have a ton of different sauces, but just plain "Spicy" is my favorite. Yum.
Ok. If I recommended these places right now, you know they have to be good, because I just made a glutton out of myself at my Mom's. LOL. I went out to swim (they have a pool) and she always makes awesome food. Drool-worthy steak, baked potatoes, salad, and the most orgasmic lemon cake ever. I swear to god I must have eaten a quarter of that cake. So needless to say, I'm stuffed to the gills, and the above restaurants are places that still sound fantastic.

*Eight West
It's at the top of the local Holiday Inn (a new, surprisingly upscale building). You feel out of place unless you're at least business casual, but the atmosphere is fantastic. I had my first martini here, and I still swear by them. They make fantastic dirty martinis, and they have a very extensive wine, whiskey, cognac, and cocktail menu. If you want it, they can provide it, no matter how pricey.
*The Knickerbocker
This is a laid back, extremely comfortable bar where the alterna-rockers rub shoulder with the hippies, who rub shoulders with the ordinary people, who rub shoulders with the artsy types. It's dark. It's smokey. It's not very loud, though, except when they have local bands playing. Even then, they keep the bands in another room so it doesn't get too loud for conversation. This place does cheap beer, but also has a decent wine and liquor list. They make a great vodka martini, too. It's one of my favorite bars to go to with good friends and just bullshit the night away.
*Chumley's
This bar has awesome music on the jukebox (Radiohead, Bowie, Blind Melon) and a HUGE selection of beer. They have an "Around the World" club, where you have to attempt to drink one of each type of beers on the menu. They have well over 100 different types of beer, with at least thirty of them on tap.
*Jake's Roadhouse
It's a college bar. You have been forewarned. I would not head to this place on a Friday or Saturday night. If you go on a week night or during the day, though, this place is pretty empty. That's the way I prefer it: more mischief, more heinous conversation, less grope from the ugly guy behind me. It's one of my favorite bars for one reason and one reason only: VERY CHEAP ALCOHOL! $3.25 pitchers of domestics (Amberbock counts), $6 pitchers of Guinness, $1.25 well drinks, $1.50 domestic bottles. Woot. And Monday through Friday they have half-price appetizers from 2 pm to 5pm. It's a college kids wet dream come true.
*Harry's Chocolate Shop
There is no place like Harry's. I met husband here (not a good reference). It is THE college bar. You don't go through Lafayette or West Lafayette without stopping in for a drink at Harry's. It's dirty. It's packed. It's worth it. Harry's music blares loudly (there are a core list of songs on the jukebox that repeat automatically, such as Bon Jovi's "Livin' On a Prayer"), people spill their drinks, and you have a great time regardless. You can't not have a good time at Harry's.
(As a nifty little sidenote, it's covered from ceiling to floor in signatures and messages from all the Purdue students who have gone before).
