I have been seeing primal in the reference to BDSM but I have not found a good definition for this term. Is primal in the BDSM community the animal inside someone? Is it the drive to want to dominate over someone like an alpha over beta in the animal kingdom?

^ You pretty much have a grasp of the idea.

[ETA] It is refereeing to domination, submission, passionate violence, kink and etc that is motivated from that animal beasty inside rather than rank & file military style protocols. More like wolfpack alpha/beta type of social order and sexual expressions.

Do women really like the animal self of a man or do they like the alphas?

Depending on who you ask, the animal self *is* the Alpha.

^^^ This.

I love when the animal/alpha in a man is a match for the one inside me.

Unfortunately, it's incredibly rare.

It is rather interesting when you put it like that because the primal instinct typically refers to flight or fight response that humans had in the past, the ability to respond to a situation based on your primal instincts. Unfortunately, modern living and the convenience of everything removes much of the need for people to respond in a primal manner and in a way, I think that explains why people must find outlets to channel their instinct.

Just for clarification...

pri·mal
ˈprīməl/
adjective

1. essential; fundamental.
"for me, writing is a primal urge"
synonyms: basic, fundamental, essential, elemental, vital, central, intrinsic, inherent
"primal masculine instincts"

2. relating to an early stage in evolutionary development; primeval.
"primal hunting societies"
synonyms: original, initial, earliest, first, primitive, primeval
"the primal source of living things"

In Psychology:
3. of, relating to, or denoting the needs, fears, or behavior that are postulated (especially in Freudian theory) to form the origins of emotional life.

I think what we're into is the essential, fundamental humanity. The animal within all of us, stripped of the niceties that civilization has put on us, for however long we can get away without them.

It's growling when we feel like it, instead of smiling and playing politics. It's taking what we want when we want it (with pre-arranged consent, of course). It's biting and clawing and screaming. It's enjoying the scent of people, instead of deodorant and perfumes.

It's a wonderful release.

I am not a primal at all times, I do not identify as primal. I do have many primal chracteristics in some of my play, and I like it that way.

After reading this definition I would say I am primal all the time. The only difference is that I have a survival instinct that makes me hide it.

Primal, to me, means biologically innate, although I would agree that the answer depends on whom you ask the question.

I can be nice when primal and I don't have to give up Miss Manners niceties to be primal. Actually, some have said that is when I'm my nicest. I don't always say please when I ask them to give it to me now, but sometimes I can speak an extra word and I always say thank you in one way or another.

Primal is hot fun and always nice. I can even get primal over a subway teriyaki chicken on oat-bran bread smothered in sweet onion sauce. Yum.

My parental primal mode is proof I am an animal. A mama animal. Come to take my job or income, you will see primal there too. Hurt someone in front of me, I might just become primal. Talking to government agencies or agents and I am always primal. I want what I want. Now. Growling can be a good thing or a bad thing, but always primal. When I talk sweet and calm, that can be primal too. In fact, it could be my most primal.

Enabling your primal side to come out is hot as hell and a great release.

It's rare to find people who are self actualized enough to engage in primal.

Primal is fundamentally of first importance, while primeval relates to first in time.

I use "primal" in a BDSM context to mean wrestling around, biting, scratching, growling, and such.

Nope.

Firstly, your definition of Primal is the secondary (less used) definition of primal.

Secondly, you're about to encounter one of the wonders of the English language because "Primal" in this context means something much more nuanced.

I think that the answer to this has to be "it depends on the woman".

To me primal implies "raw", getting back to your inner animal or your core.

But it also implies "basic" and "lacking in sophistication", and the woman I date would most likely scorn "Primal", preferring sophisticated and "evolved" (albeit with a sense that the primal is there.... lurking).

Regrettably, I've seen primal used as a self description by people who rely on the moniker to excuse their poor social skills, so I do tend to roll my eyes these days when the term comes up.

I agree with this, especially the bold part.

For myself, primal is a type of hedonism. Its a self indulgent place we visit when we are flying high during some daring play. Its something we touch on and become just for a moment but not something we are.

For me, when someone claims they have a primal type personality, the message they want to give out is, they are naturally in constant touch with a much deeper dominant/submissive side. I just see a primal personality as someone who lacks self control.
