MercTech -> Targeted advertising... (7/20/2015 4:17:52 PM)

Hmm, should an advertising company target ads to you based on your current bank balance?

Now, should they be able to do so? Anyone willing to allow advertising companies access to reading your bank balance if you have a choice?

It's an "opt in," so, if you want, you can opt in. If you don't want them to be able to do so, you don't opt in.

I know, for me, that being shown ads for gadgets I can't afford doesn't bother me all that much. If the ads I get show more affordable items, I'm still unlikely to purchase them simply because an ad pops up.

target marketing has been around for a long time, this is just another version of that.. some companies will charge you more or less depending on where they think you live & how affluent (or not) buyers are there.. i experienced that price shopping online, using the Tor browser the site doesnt know where i am so i get a price thats 20% less.. there are many stores that do that tho.. thats why the store/site wants to know where you live..

Personally, I would not opt into apple knowing what my bank account balance is.. i really dont know why anyone would opt in to that.. how do you know that they wont sell that info to other companies? how do you know if they will keep your personal info safe from hackers or disgruntled, underpaid employees that decide to sell your info for a couple of bucks? imo there is a big downside and no upside to that.. Companies that want that info are looking for easily manipulated impulse buyers, which i am not anyway..

Yeah, just what Americans 'need'; an app that destroys their budget even further!

Americans have enough of a hard time dealing with their annual budget, without a sales tool that not only knows how much you have, but can target (based on pass purchases, behaviors, and even viewpoints) ads that drive the impulse to purchase. How do I know this? Well, people bitch about taxes, yet never know how much they actually paid (very few people take every tax from gas, food, clothing, and even purchases into account). They also complain that things at stores are to expensive.

Now, we add in those Americans that are impulsive shoppers. They buy stuff without seriously thinking nor considering the financial problems.

We experienced this psychology behavior before: Poor College Students obtaining Credit Cards. How many were bankrupt before their senior year of college?

Trouble is, most people will not understand this app's nature or motivation. So best to inform people, right?
