2015 Perseid meteor shower is going to be especially awesome

This year the meteor watching should be especially good because the shower peaks between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, coinciding with the new moon... Most of these streaks will last for less than a second, but a few of the brighter ones will leave trails of vaporized gases and glowing air molecules that could take up to a few seconds to fade, according to the Royal Astronomical Society... And if you are wondering where to look, the answer is anywhere.

Here on the Suncoast, they're forecasting a 40% chance of thunderstorms overnight on Wednesday. Not the best odds, but better than none.

Thank you for reminding me. I had forgotten with all that's happening around here. For some reason the meteor shower almost always falls on cloudy nights. I do remember one clear night. It was awesome with some meteors going nearly all the way across the sky.

Yes, I am crazy about feathered creatures. I have a dozen chickens, 3 ducks, 5 geese, and 2 parakeets.

Revise that number. Just got 14 new chicks and 5 turkeys.

Our skies are supposed to be (at least "partially") cloudy, as well. That sucks.

Since we live in a sort of populated area (Right across the river from Downtown Wilkes-Barre), I'm taking the ladies to "The Grand Canyon of Pennsyltucky".

Having been to the real Grand Canyon, that's a rather lofty billing, but there are a few resorts on top of what passes for mountains, here. No lights, though; a huge plus.

I hope everyone enjoys!

It was cloudy in the UK last night. I knew there had to be something going on behind those clouds, a something that would etch streaks across my retinas when the clouds parted. The short night drowned in the dawn and then the chance was gone. I had waited in vain, but I knew the time would come again, and I would be there... waiting for the trails of gold to come burning across the sky... watching with my head back and mouth open... and making my usual wish for a million pound lottery win.

Ive had a nice preview of them already, as they have been ongoing for a couple of weeks now. On the night of August 6th my girl and I spent the night in the middle of the high desert Southwest of here, out on the water in my jet boat on the far end of the Owyhee Reservoir . The sky was perfectly clear and the moon was totally out of sight...

There werent as many meteors then as there will be tonight, but the ones we saw helped make our unexpected stay through that long cold desert night a lot more tolerable.

No cell signal out there btw, couldnt even Google the words to the Gilligans Island theme song. I may post more on our little boating adventure in the next few days on a new thread. It was an interesting time...

Unfortunately, the smoke from a massive nearby range fire is blocking out view here tonight

"Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale; a tale of a fateful trip
that started from this tropic port, aboard this tiny ship (it was, actually, a boat).

The mate was a mighty sailin' man. The Skipper; brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail, that day, for a three hour tour (a three hour tour).

The weather started getting rough, the tiny ship was tossed.
If not for the courage of the fearless crew, the Minnow would be lost (The Minnow would be lost).

The ship's a-ground on the shore of this un-charted desert isle
with Gilligan, The Skipper, too, the millionaire and his wife,
the movie star and the rest, are here on Gilligan's Isle"

From memory. However, shortly after the show started, the last verse changed to:

" ... The ship's a-ground on the shore of this un-charted desert isle
with Gilligan, The Skipper, too, the millionaire and his wife,
the movie star, the professor and Mary Ann ... here, on Gilligan's Isle"

Hope I helped.

Thanks Michael but its been nearly a week since our rescue, and we have cell service now. Googled the words almost the minute we got back home

And, ours was a boat, too, but we started from a desert port... Or launch

Its funny as hell now. Then? Not so much

For those that may be in the same plight I am, with Mother Nature not co-operating for optimum viewing, I offer this:

You can watch the meteors.
