My sons 4th grade teacher said that her students needed to study 8 hours daily and 20 hours on weekend to prepare them for college.

How much time do you think should be spent on homework daily?

Lucylastic -> RE: Homework Standard (8/12/2015 9:39:29 PM)

I take it that 8 hours a day includes hours spent in school?

enslaver -> RE: Homework Standard (8/12/2015 9:50:25 PM)

20 hours on weekend?? I have news for her. Most COLLEGE students won`t put that in

Depends on what it takes.

DerangedUnit -> RE: Homework Standard (8/12/2015 10:02:34 PM)

Sounds like shes bullshitting them to try to push them. Struggle makes the brain grow.... but that seems misguided. If i heard that as a kid id just be like "fuck this than i quit" if the kid is spending that much time on studying they should just test out of school. I mean come on, how many fractions and exponents can you do. A kid putting in that much time should have differential calculus licked within the year

Exactly my thought but this also promotes sleep deprivation which is getting beyond endurance, even for the young.

KenDckey -> RE: Homework Standard (8/13/2015 5:16:28 AM)

10 minutes (give or take depending on maturity level and understand and availability to teaching/learning materials) seems somewhat appropriate to me. The rest is I believe just crap.

I would think that quality should be emphasized over quantity. As I recall, they spend a lot of time doing busywork in the elementary grades.

altoonamaster -> RE: Homework Standard (8/13/2015 8:09:28 AM)

let the kids be kids growing up/no school college or otherwise is worth a lost childhood

There are a lot of variables.. but imo if the kid learns the material in class then why do they need to study what they already know?

Imo, kids brains are like big sponges.. you could cut 12 school years of learning in half the time.. the problem with schools is that there is a lot of wasted time and how well kids learn depends on how good/decent the teacher is at teaching.. a shitty teacher will not be able to teach kids anything (even to smart kids).. When i was a kid i had good/decent teachers and shitty teachers and when i didnt learn it was due to having a very shitty teacher that year..

Given they are at school for six hours. A little less than five hours for five subjects (math, english, history, science, phz ed, open study). Plus each subject has lessons to take home, so the parents can see what their kids are learning (i.e. showing their tax dollars hard at work). Two hours a night to develop good study habits. Sounds about right.

This is not all just 'book learning' or 'lecture learning'. Its learning to apply what one learns in school in practical applications. A good parent will develop ways for that practical applications to develop.

I did about 20 hours on a weekend. Ever write a forty page paper? Single spaced? With all the references? In a presentation format?

In college, much of the 'good' studying does not take place with books and homework. Its the many discussions that take place. Where students learn to form arguments and give supporting information that backs up the viewpoint. Some of those debates can last the whole day (ordering pizza in at least one point).

The President of the United States does this same exact process if you study his speeches objectively. He has a primary argument and perhaps one or two secondary arguments. He will show evidence or give insight to his thinking process. This is to allow the listener to agree or disagree based upon the merits of what is stated and not stated.

Yeah, I partied like any other college student. I also worked part time during most of that schooling. Graduated with a 3.6 GPA. 20 hours of study would not be unheard of, given the number of books one has to read within a semester.

Well I have to admit, I can't dispute comparing your college to the 4th grade. [:D]

Yeah, CONTEXT, you fucking imbecile!

A fourth grader does require learning quite a bit of information in 2015. Many times more than you did when you were that age. That you can not seem to understand the concept shows your level of education. And it is very lacking in every area. Not that I've pointed this out on scores of topics in the last dozen months now....

Kirata is to me, what all the conservatives are to President Obama: Attack me over any issue, regardless of the facts or how much of an ass it makes him look like. An each time, he is intellectually out flanked and made to look like a fool. After a dozen months of being beaten down like this, one would think he, like conservatives, would learn from previous mistakes. He, like conservatives, have not. That is because he, like them, lack skills often taught in schools.

You can understand the metaphor here, right? Since Kirata will not!

When enslaver stated correctly that even college students don't put in that much time over a weekend, he was making the point that it's ridiculous to expect 4th graders to do so. Joether chose to argue against enslaver's position by claiming that college students do put in that much time, and as he makes clear in his later response to me, 4th graders have so much more to learn these days. Many times more! Oh my! So yeah, I think he was drawing a connection. And with regard to my comment, one must always (as joether himself recommends) consider the wider context.

You're making shit up again. With apologies for the delay, because I've had other things to do besides waste time with the Search function, you've made more than a dozen posts in four different topics since the last time I bothered to respond to one back on August 8th. Get over yourself. You're not that important to me.

Just looked up 4th grade and apparently 9 or 10 years old?

She isn't serious surely?!

At that age!?

Children should be learning social skills at that age and being out and about in the fresh air or at the swimming baths or something.

Yes, by all means prepare children for having to put extra hours in in adult life, but not at that age - too early.

If parents/teachers want to teach children the value of investing time to earn a reward, can't the children get a paper round or something?

MercTech -> RE: Homework Standard (8/15/2015 7:43:46 AM)

That teacher reminds me of the loopy teachers I had in high school that thought that their course was the only one that counted and would assign 4 hours of homework each night. Yep, ignoring the fact that there would be homework for other subjects as well.
