Sounds like shes bullshitting them to try to push them. Struggle makes the brain grow.... but that seems misguided. If i heard that as a kid id just be like "fuck this than i quit" if the kid is spending that much time on studying they should just test out of school. I mean come on, how many fractions and exponents can you do. A kid putting in that much time should have differential calculus licked within the year

10 minutes (give or take depending on maturity level and understand and availability to teaching/learning materials) seems somewhat appropriate to me. The rest is I believe just crap.

As I recall, they spend a lot of time doing busywork in the elementary grades.

Imo, kids brains are like big sponges.. you could cut 12 school years of learning in half the time.. the problem with schools is that there is a lot of wasted time and how well kids learn depends on how good/decent the teacher is at teaching.. a shitty teacher will not be able to teach kids anything (even to smart kids).. When i was a kid i had good/decent teachers and shitty teachers and when i didnt learn it was due to having a very shitty teacher that year..

A little less than five hours for five subjects (math, english, history, science, phz ed, open study). Plus each subject has lessons to take home, so the parents can see what their kids are learning (i.e. showing their tax dollars hard at work). Two hours a night to develop good study habits. Sounds about right. This is not all just 'book learning' or 'lecture learning'. Its learning to apply what one learns in school in practical applications. A good parent will develop ways for that practical applications to develop.

With all the references? In a presentation format? In college, much of the 'good' studying does not take place with books and homework. Its the many discussions that take place. Where students learn to form arguments and give supporting information that backs up the viewpoint. Some of those debates can last the whole day (ordering pizza in at least one point). The President of the United States does this same exact process if you study his speeches objectively. He has a primary argument and perhaps one or two secondary arguments. He will show evidence or give insight to his thinking process. This is to allow the listener to agree or disagree based upon the merits of what is stated and not stated. Yeah, I partied like any other college student. I also worked part time during most of that schooling. Graduated with a 3.6 GPA. 20 hours of study would not be unheard of, given the number of books one has to read within a semester.

Children should be learning social skills at that age and being out and about in the fresh air or at the swimming baths or something. Yes, by all means prepare children for having to put extra hours in in adult life, but not at that age - too early. If parents/teachers want to teach children the value of investing time to earn a reward, can't the children get a paper round or something?

That teacher reminds me of the loopy teachers I had in high school that thought that their course was the only one that counted and would assign 4 hours of homework each night. Yep, ignoring the fact that there would be homework for other subjects as well.
