Would the man get very offended, if you just told him, it would be nice if he let you know, if he ate the leftovers in the fridge, so that you can make contingency plans in the future, if his gonna do that? So that you can ensure dinner will always go smoothly?

I'm the worst person in the world with diplomacy, but it would surprise if that would not be the right thing to say that could cause offense.

Booby trap the leftovers.

The Man doesn't tend to get involved in meal planning. But tonight we got home and I was under the impression that the leftover chicken I made a few days ago was still in the fridge, ready to quickly turn into dinner.

Instead, he saw me searching the fridge uselessly and when I told him what I was looking for, he then informed me he had eaten it the last couple of nights.

Luckily I had something else defrosted and ready to cook immediately but that's not always the case.

I'd like to offer some suggestions of how to avoid this in the future, but barring him sticking a note on the fridge so I would see it in the morning, I can't think of any.

Any thoughts? I don't want to just complain but I also don't want a repeat of terror at 6:00 PM.. And obviously I don't want him to feel he can't eat. Especially as chicken is a lot healthier than his usual choices, so I'd like to encourage that.

This post by Bhruic makes the most sense..... but it also underlines the problem is one of communication.... All sorts of silly stuff happens when nobody is talking planning and directing.

We don't reheat - fastest way to food poisoning or stomach upset, especially with poultry or fish.

Re-heating chicken is fine provided its not been frozen and only re-heated once. Chefs re-heat chicken all the time, they just use a thermometer to check its reached the required temperature. The only thing I don't re-heat is rice, not because I can't if done properly but because I personally don't want to take the risk.

DesFip, Steve and me are not big meat eaters and so one small chicken is going to last us at least two days. Steve is a fridge thief! and so I always tell him that the left over chicken is going to be used for a further meal. Could you not just remind him that you intend to use the chicken that is now in the fridge for the next meal?

When we are living on the boat we don't have a freezer, so everything we eat has to be fresh (we don't eat ready meals). When we are sailing we need to have plenty of supplies that won't perish quickly and we need to be able to throw something together quickly. Eggs are my one saving grace because there is nothing more filling than an omelette with a few vege. Stir fried vegetables with some cooked pasta thrown in and a good sprinkling of parmesan cheese is another healthy alternative. A risotto takes about 20 minutes to throw together, though you do need something to put in it. I always have sweet potatoes, green onions and parmesan which keep really well and make a very tasty nice risotto.

Desfip, there is one thing I have worked out about you over the years and its that you are a very keen and probably a very good cook. I've seen your suggestions on the cooking forums and you clearly know your way around a good recipe. Whilst advising you on alternatives, I do feel like I'm trying to tell you how to suck eggs [:)] but you did ask for advise so....!

It's just me here at home, but I keep single servings of hearty soups and stews in ziploc bags in the freezer for when I need a meal right away but don't have time to cook. The single serving defrosts quickly in warm water and can be heated. A green salad and maybe a sourdough roll (I culture my own starter, and I make rolls a lot with the extra - slice and freeze them, then send them through the toaster oven when I want one) complete the meal and I can have it together in under 10 minutes. It's not haute cuisine, but it does make for a quick, homey meal.

I salute anyone who makes their own sourdough bread. Its the only sort of bread I eat but my attempts at making it have failed thus far.

I'm grateful for any advice Maria. And while I think an omelet or fried rice is a fine dinner, he does not. He's one of these meat and potato guys unfortunately.
