yet again over this summer I had two box fans and slept like a baby in my mother's arms.

Now the winter is coming and I can't keep those fans on or freeze my ass off.

I am trying a CD I've made of the sound of a box fan, rain on a river, and finishing it up with 3 hours of a rainstorm recorded from the inside of a car.

Do you use anything similar, or something different?

A fish tank with a FINE mist airstone (the small white synthetic ones) makes a similar noise, and an air pump uses minimal electricity...plus a little trio of young goldfish in a ten gallon tank (atop a rugged bureau) won't need a heater and will give you something to watch on nights when you're having trouble sleeping.

I can't sleep in a silent room either. For some reason it puts Me on red alert and I end up having to investigate every damn noise I hear. The farm is surrounded by miles-thick forest on all sides so there's always SOMETHING out there, or the horses are up to mischief. I hear EVERYTHING if I don't run something like the fish tanks or the tv. Sometimes having perfect hearing can be a CURSE.

White noise machine. Many have different sounds you can pick from.

I got a white noise app on my tablet.
Ive been using the fan all summer for the quiet. during the winter I have an old small desktop fan, that while isnt very good for actually moving air around, the sound of the motor puts me to sleep within minutes.

yeah, i tried a free app on my tablet too.. I hate listening to someone else's noise or outside noise when i am trying to sleep so finally tried it out.. had a choice of various sounds.. i picked the sound of "rain" (ok, it sounded close enough to rain).. it went all night until i turned it off in the morning.. :) and actually, that has been the best use of the tablet so far (I dont like them much, they are no substitute for a real computer/laptop)...

There seem to be apps for your phone that can generate all kinds of noises (white, pink, etc.) Meant for people who have a tinnitus like me. Personally I can't stand any of that stuff. I prefer the frying pan over the fire if you know what I mean.

I used to have a sleep CD that played delta waves, it worked fairly well.

Pack the box fans away and get a cube space heater. You get fan noise and keeping things warm for the cold season.

I have to have a fan on so I can sleep. When winter comes around, I face the fan away from me and snuggle up under an electric blanket.

I don't have a smart phone but I do have quite a collection of noises I can play on any of my computers or laptops scattered all over the house.

Seeing as I can't seem to keep the house cool enough (the lowest we've managed in the last 3 months is about 26C [79F]), we've had all the ceiling fans running and various USB fans and a tower fan running 24/7 lately.
Unfortunately, they are almost silent even if the air flow is nice.

Being a news junkie, I just stick the news on the TV on a low volume and it invariably sends me to sleep in minutes. It gives just enough light for me to see where I'm going when I need to rush to the loo or make my way downstairs to fix a bite to eat so I don't need to use the bedside lamp or the main light - saves waking the OH up.
When I wake up in the night (which I do a lot), and have a drink or a munch downstairs, I have my big fish tank that feeds into a refugium and the gentle sound of the trickle of the water soon has me nodding off.

So it doesn't really matter where I am, there are things around me that send me to sleep very easily, even in the day time.

I'm with freedomdwarf. Switch on a news channel with low volume and I'm nodding off in no time.

Once, during a power outage, I couldn't sleep because it was too dark and too quiet!!

yeah,.. you can do the same thing with vids.. I frequently fall asleep watching movies/vids downloaded onto my laptop.. problem with that is that i miss huge chunks of the shows that I actually do want to watch, so I rewind back but fall asleep again, missing the same part again.. there have been times i have tried watching the same part repeatedly to no avail!... that has ruined some good shows for me..

When I go to Austin, having Faux News does it for me...
